Like the Tribe Club, both restricted and un-restricted donations were accepted. For some reason, un-restricted funds were spent first, even when restricted funds were available for those areas where unrestricted funds were spent and weren't.

This created a huge issue when the organization had large, overstated balances for certain applications, but no money for general operations. That couldn't be the problem we have here could it?

You never know. Misappropriation of funds, probably not, but we all know that nobody was paying much attention either. Waste, for sure.

Kaplan renovation and new practice/strength area highlighted on acting-AD's email today...finally something formally released to say its not dead.

Will be done in stages with new practice building first...date to be forthcoming this spring...according to
two major supporters of athletic program.

Great news...and will assist Dane in his recruiting.

W&M needs to raise by this fall the remaining 7M to start the BB practice facility combined with Sports Performance facility before construction can start for Phase 1 which also should include new scoreboard in the Kap. Once the remaining funds need for the Kap get raised ( about 20M) then revitalized Kap gets done in phase 2.

This is an excerpt from today's Tennis Facility announcement. I am unclear from the reading, if they are talking about the Tennis Center or the projects, in general, which would suggest we may have a while before we will see any activity on Kaplan.


W&M Tennis to see big boost

Efforts are underway through All In to reimagine the home for W&M Athletics, including the construction of a new Sports Performance Center and the revitalization of Kaplan Arena — two facilities of many that will encompass the William & Mary Athletics Complex. The tennis courts sit across from the envisioned Sports Performance Center, where student-athletes will train, compete and study.

According to Katie Garrett Boehly ’95 and Todd Boehly ’96, the visionaries behind the complex and honorary co-chairs of All In, “Once complete, the complex will underscore the university’s commitment to being recognized for its academics and athletics.”

The reimagined home will require an additional $29-million investment. While a large percentage of funds was secured for the complex through For the Bold, there remains a significant gap in funding to begin the project, which will move forward in a phased approach.

You are correct it could be more forthwith.

As noted in my previous post, we need 7M by this fall to start the practice faculty which is part of the Sports Performance complex and then a unclear amount of 20-22M for the main Kap renovation. Timeline to raise these under "All In" appears to be sometime in 2023.

Hope Todd whispered into Joes ear to get special federal funds for Kaplan as part of Virginia's infrastructure needs. Maybe a Historic Triangle natatorium while we're at it...

The price went up over the last couple of years. Great commitments from big donors. Six million more will take another big donor or a lot of years.

WAVY-10 is running a story this morning about the “All In” campaign on their local morning news show. It included video from a Gold Rush game…Marcus Thornton, Omar Prewitt, and Sean Sheldon are among the players I saw in a 10 sec. clip.

Hit me right in the feels. Wasn’t expecting that.

Wasn’t the big donor the same guy who owns most of the L.A. Dodgers? Since they have been busy in the free agent market, especially signing Freddie Freeman, that guy probably doesn’t have a cent to spare for W&M.

The last few years he’s also bought part of the Lakers, the LA Sparks, and is currently part of a consortium trying to buy Chelsea for $3 billion+. He must have a few hundred thousand lying around to get Kaplan upgraded.

According to AD Mann who spoke at a recent Fast Break meeting, the addition to Kaplan with basketball practice facility and Volleyball court is supposed to start this spring. He did not indicate whether there was sufficient funding secured to complete the project.
