I quit paying attention to Houston after Clyde Drexler matriculated into the NBA.

Im just playing. My son actually goes to Texas St, so I have followed them for the last few years. They have a good team, though I imagine it can be somewhat frustrating to be a Bobcat fan at times. The team can seem unbelievably good for stretches and then absolutely terrible at other times---lol...usually all within the same game. The S Miss game is more the rule than the exception. They can definitely be dangerous.

You summed up what it's like to be a Bobcat fan.

3 seasons into FBS I think we are doing better than most. Our fan base is just very reactive because we haven't developed an identity at this level yet, the more wins and winning seasons we have the less a loss like last week will shake us.

RE: Texas State @ Houston discussion
Above all other fanbases that I observe, Houston fans seek affirmation and praise the most...almost like their lives depend on it. I'm not sure what that's about.

I think it probably has to do with the fact that they were once in the SWC, set NCAA records with the Run-and-Shoot, and had a Heisman....and they're trying way too hard to be relevant again.

I've lived my whole life in Texas but never Houston. I don't cheer for any Houston pro sports teams, but I've never cheered against them either. I never cheer for or considered going to UH, but I've also never had a problem with them.....until recently.

Their fans are ********. Every single UH fan that I have encountered in the past few years has been an *******. What's up with that?

Well then you should consider giving living in Houston a shot, because I can tell you there aren't many fans of UH here.

Not smack talk at all. It's an observation.

However, having lived in Coway / Myrtle Beach, SC and Houston, TX, my experience has been there is a bigger Coastal presence in Conway, SC than a UH presence in Houston, TX.

I'm sure a large part of that is because Houston is a huge city, largely full of transplants here strictly for a job opportunity, like myself.

I see plenty of Houston stuff around. The issue in Houston frankly is that Houston is a flighty sports town. Its a band wagon town with, as you mention, a ton of transplants. About 7-8 years ago the place was literally plastered with Longhorn gear. Now I don't see it much more than UH gear. I think any honest UH fan would say Aggie, Longhorn, then Cougars in Houston. That probably says far more about the pecking order of G5 football in a major league town than it does about the Cougars in particular. By far, Texans gear dwarfs all the college gear you'll see worn about town. The ratings of a typical Texans game in Houston will be in the mid 20's. The best college games will score a 4 to 5 rating in Houston. Most are around the .5-2 ratings level. The truth is, in most any city of this size (about 6 million in the greater Houston area), the population is far too diverse for any single school to "own". That said, its so big that there is a sizable audience for many schools here and a huge band wagon of casual t-shirt fans to jump on board with anyone when they get on a roll.

We have a roller coaster identity. The roller coaster can be from game-to-game or within a game. A great example was our upset win over Houston on the road in 2012. Houston was favored by 35 points and we won 30-13.

That win raised expectations for our home game the next week against Texas Tech. Tech was favored by 17. We got boat raced 58-10. The lesson...when in Vegas, never bet for or against Texas State.

The P5 to G5 effect explains why there is more Aggie and Longhorn gear, but it doesn't explain why there is more Texas State gear around here.

I literally didn't know what Texas State's mascot was before moving to Houston, TX, and I saw the little bobcat logo so much that I went and looked them up and found out it was Texas State. I saw so much of it, that I thought the school was in the city of Houston.

I'm not kidding or trolling when I say there is an absolute crap ton of Texas state gear being sported in this city. Especially where I live in the suburbs.

I've lived in Houston for 8 years. I remember when no one talked about UH and then they beat TT at home and everyone jumped in the bandwagon. They've seen attendance and stadium growth ever since that win.

UH is like TXST or any other G5 school. The fans are passionate but if you talk about your team around fans of P5 schools they just aren't as interested as discussing other P5 teams.

I do see more UH fans here than TXST but still not very many

There is nothing to explain. Your observation is your observation. But your observation would not be consistent with what I have observed over a lifetime of living in this city. I see very little Tx St gear. Truthfully, I see far more Tech gear/flags than Tx St gear. The best test---walk into your local Academy and see what they carry. By the way, if you live in the Cypress area, its worth noting that Cy Fair HS has about 3500 students, has Maroon as their primary color, and uses almost the exact same Bobcat logo. It would be easy to think one was the other at first glance.
