College basketball: Five teams that could surprise in March
Quote:So as this season unfolds we’re going to keep an eye on these five programs, check their progress periodically. All belong to conferences that typically generate one bid to the NCAA tournament and a seed somewhere in the teens. Although some have scheduled aggressively, their NCAA dreams could be reduced to how they fare in their conference tournament.
Based on what we’ve seen over the years, however, don’t be surprised if one - or more - becomes the center of national attention in the days between the opening weekend and the Sweet 16.
5. Louisiana-Lafayette
The Ragin’ Cajuns have perhaps the best NBA prospect among the non power conference programs. Shawn Long averaged 16.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and shot 54.2 percent from the field a year ago. The 6-11, 246-pound senior is a large and skilled weapon not many Sun Belt Conference teams possess.
Louisiana-Lafayette is entering its sixth season under coach Bob Marlin................

Hardly. The story was posted yesterday. Should I have waited until January?

A week or so ago I posted about our baseball recruiting class for this year......#13 in the country. Lots of good things happening for Cajun athletics, even we did have major suckage on the football field last week.

Not a good week for Cajun fans nor Mark Hudspeth.
At this point, I'm just hoping for a winning season.

Honestly, I really don't understand the sentiment.
Hud said what was on his mind and while it could have been worded better, there was still more truth than fiction in what he said. In the end, he failed to have the team prepared despite the distractions, period, and any team in the country that's not prepared for Saturday better not be surprised when someone hangs an L on 'em. I posted here that the Akron game concerned me because it was sandwiched between a bye week and LaTech and the move to the new APC.
LaTech will probably pummel our butts on Saturday as well, but unless the team just collapses thereafter, is that really any different than what we've seen just about every year over the last four?
Sure, we don't have a Terrance Broadway-type qb stepping in at this point, but one thing Hud has consistently done is pull his fat out of the fire when it seemed all was lost.
Until proven otherwise, I suspect he'll do it again this year.

Still, it's unlike you guys to start talking basketball before you've even played a conference game in football.
You should just be like us and not sponsor a basketball program, makes decisions much easier around this point.

Actually that's exactly how it has been besides these past 4 years. Normally we couldn't wait for basketball by the time conference football started. Just we have a little buzz about this season, first time since Marlin has been here that every main piece has returned... Coming off a 22 win season, lots of optimism. Also, most people didn't think Shawn Long would return and he did..... And the article came out yesterday.

The downside of your strategery is that even though you no longer sponsor a basketball program, you're still paying for a head coach.
As Louisiana99 said, Shawn Long is a special player that we were convinced would be gone by now so this could be a special year for us. Toss in the success of our last two baseball teams and what's not to be giddy about?
Oh, I forgot. LaTech Saturday night. That's a reason not to be giddy.
