RE: Ranking The Sunbelt: Week 2
Apps defense is for real, Clemson couldn't move the ball in the first half without some kind of turnover that gave them a short field. Defense only got stronger as the game went on, only gave up 100 yds in the second half with Clemson's starters only coming out in the 4th. Offense will be fine, never seen a better secondary than Clemson, receivers couldn't get off the line, once they saw they could cover with just 3 or 4 guys, they basically put 7 or 8 guys in the box, Lamb and the backs didn't stand a chance, still, disappointing with the play calling, way too conservative, after a couple of series, offense looked lost, and receivers just couldn't get off the line.

1. GS - it's the homer in me but it was a fantastic game in front of an energetic home crowd as we beat our alter-egos from the MAC.
2. ULM - shutting out a team at home is great even if they are a cupcake.
3. StAte - Seems like it was a nice home game to almost take down a good SEC team.
4. TXST - piling it on against the scrubs. Defense could've done a little more though.
T5. GaSt - Congratulations on winning! It was an exciting finish.
T5. ULL - still piling it on vs the scrubs but ULL wasn't looking to try to push the score up which I like. No sense in tiring out players for no reason.
T5. Troy - Another good show vs the scrubs.
8. App - Sorry guys. Didn't look too sharp against Clemson.
9. NMSU - almost had the win. I was kind of surprised by the crowd though. I thought y'all were expecting quite a bit for the opener.
10. USA - also a good thrashing by a good Nebraska team
11. Idaho - bad show against USC.

With all due respect to your App comment. After being at Clemson yesterday I will put our Defense up against ANY offense in the SBC.

As far as the mistakes our QB made yesterday to make the game look more lopsided that it really was, I'm willing to say right here and now that Lamb will rebound and by the time SBC play begins he will be light years ahead of where he was even late last year.

I agree with everything you stated. Defense is going to be good for App and I've sang Lamb's praises since watching him in the Boro last year.

when you play against a team like Clemson, or in GS case, WV, you see the kind of players you hope to someday get on a regular basis, the Clemson interception for a td was 300 lb lineman, who dropped 10 yds in coverage made the catch, then outran everyone to the endzone, Lamb will never see that kind of athlete the rest of the season.

RE: Ranking The Sunbelt: Week 2
In truth, it's really difficult to rank the Sun Belt until AFTER week 4.

Most of us are playing the body bag game early (week 1 or 2) and the FCS game early (week 1 or 2). Then some have a bye this third week.

That really puts it at after week 4 to see what our teams can/will do against similar competition. P5 is not similar competition. Neither is FCS.

RE: Ranking The Sunbelt: Week 2
I honestly do not know. The games so far have mostly featured mismatches one way or another. We played a middle of the road FCS team this week and did what we had to. ULM played a terrible FCS team and skull drug them. I think we will know more in the next 2 weeks. As for the Cajuns, we have an open date and then play Akron, followed by La Tech. Those games will tell us a lot about the Cajuns. Other teams like NMSU and Idaho seem to be as expected, terrible. Since Georgia State finally broke through with a win, they could surprise some people. Sometimes getting a little confidence can go a long way in the SBC, as the talent level is pretty even for the most part. USA has not impressed so far, but one win over a FBS and a blowout loss to a P5 team is not unexpected. Next weeks game against SDSU should tell us a lot more since they are closer to the SBC level than either of the previous games. Nice win for GSU against Western Michigan, so they have pretty much atoned for the blowout loss last week. As far as Texas State, they won a game against a really poor FCS team and lost to a P5 so there is not enough evidence to make a call yet. Troy, who knows?, but I think they need a couple of years of recruiting to recover from the last few years of the Blakely era. Hopefully ASU will get their first win this week.

So as I started the post saying, who knows? The next few weeks will be interesting. 07-coffee3

2) stAte- played a good SEC team at home and should have won... Last week lost on the road to a top 10 team.

3) GS- good win against Western Michigan but how good is western Michigan?

4) Troy- took control of a top 30 FCS program who has played P5 and G5 programs down to the wire recently.

5) Texas State- good win over a FCS program. We will know more about them
Next week.

6) App State- was down 31-0 at halftime against a good Clemson team it appears. Don't know a lot about them either. Their win last week over Howard doesn't tell us anything yet either

7) ULM- dominated a not so great FCS program. Still don't know a lot about them yet.

8) USA- Struggled with Gardner Webb last week and was beat pretty bad yesterday.

9) Ga State- great win over NMSU. One step at a time but should have beaten Charlotte.

10) NMSU- embarrassing loss infront of 27k + fans is never a good thing.

11) Idaho- Going to be a long year for them I'm afraid.

Hard to argue with your rankings. I do believe our defense, especially the front seven, played really well yesterday. Watson and the receivers were unbelievable and made our DBs look worse than they are. But, you are right we went from one extreme to the other in the course of a week. We might have played the worst team any SBC team will play and at the same potentially the best team to play an SBC team this year. No doubt, yesterday was a reality check. The key will be how we respond.

I'm with you. It almost feels like our first two games were pre-season exhibitions in that we got our players some action but you really don't learn anything from the outcomes. Our season starts in a couple of weeks at Old Dominion.

RE: Ranking The Sunbelt: Week 2
All I know after two weeks is that Vegas is probably pretty unhappy with GS. We under-perform (according to the spread) by 25 one week and then blow the spread out of the water by 30 the next. Lots of head scratching going on.

App will be fine, although I still think they aren't as good as the prognosticators who proclaimed them champs based on their five seconds of study coming up with all those returning starters as a good stat to cite.

Monroe, TXST and App are all in the same boat of playing so far on both extremes that a good opinion can't be formed yet.

Arkansas St. seemed to do a good job of bouncing back, although the SEC hater in me would love to cite that close game as another blight on the SEC's horrible Week 2.

Georgia Southern went a long way toward regaining all of the pride it lost in West Virginia. The Eagles didn't just go toe-to-toe with a decent G5 OOC team, they flipped back into Hulk mode.

ULL has looked good so far... Too bad they don't get to really prove themselves to the conference champs until 2016.

I get that we haven't exactly been worldbeaters over the past few years but people on this board take shots at Idaho WAAAY faster than they do at other teams in the conference.

So far we've played 2 games. We had 2 unfortunate 1st quarter turnovers against Ohio that put us in a hole but we moved the ball effectively and made the game competitive. Ohio had a quality win against Marshall this week and looks like a very good team.

This week we got clobbered in our bodybag game just like everyone else in the conference. In fact, we played the same team as StAte with almost the same final score.

I've watched both games. We have a good offense, good special teams, and I believe our defense has actually slightly upgraded from catastrophic to horrendous. We're still a year away from real contention but I think we can win a few games in the conference.

Only one team in the Sun Belt has beaten an OOC FBS team so far this year. We haven't played our FCS team yet. If we lose to Wofford on Saturday feel free to jump all over us. Until then, everybody R-E-L-A-X. Relax.

honestly 5-7 range......we have 2 out of next 3 are really tough and just hope we play well to very well and not get injuries......standing 2-3 after the first 5 will be ok and only ok if we look good against USA and keep improving against the big boys....and as above.....LETS SEE then where we are.........WE are light years ahead of past few in player attitude and effort......we will see if that is true after the next 3 games.....IF IT IS.....Troy will compete with anyone in conference and that would be frankly surprising to me.......

Who knows about Troy....but pretty sure about this.....the last game of the year with you guys is usually a pretty good game no matter what.....We have played some close ones and I look forward to being able to play close or win due to having a good season coming in......BUT WHO KNOWS is exactly right!!!!

I anticipate WMU will be a decent team this season but their record might not show it. I'm going to hold off any major projections till mid-season. A few unexpected MAC teams showed promise this weekend.

Bowling Green > Maryland (48-27)
Eastern Michigan > Wyoming (48-29)
Toledo > #18 Arkansas (16-12)

South Fans are going to finally get a feel for our team this week vs SDSU.

Week one we did our typical flat home opener.
Week two we ran into a buzz saw.

So far, our team has not impressed.
But I have seen enough to think they can turn the corner.
