To be fair, USM played MS St (we had almost 39,000 last year), and Marshal played Purdue. The Sun Belt had Howard, Charlette, Gardner Webb, and Ohio.

We had Howard at App, almost full, had UNCC at ever underperforming on the field and in the stands GaSt, on a Friday afternoon at 3:30 local. Gardner Webb at South, should have been better numbers, we are growing, slowly, and Ohio and Idaho, it only holds 15k.

Didn't have a fighting chance on these games.

We will have a better idea after week 5 or 6.

It also didn't help listening to the radio pregame where they were marveling over a half-hour delay for lightning when the skies looked A-OK while the local media was predicting thunderstorms at 6:30 (never happened). Even I was beginning to ponder turning around while on my way to Ladd-Peebles because my allergies are dragging me down pretty good and sitting in a thunderstorm didn't sound like a very healthy thing for me to do.

Just my theories.

While yes, nobody is going to care about bad opponents, that thought typically is ignored the for the first game of the season with kick off enthusiasm. I find that type of apathy is for later in the season.

I have been impressed by USA as a fan base since our game in Mobile in 2010. Really going to chalk this up to opponent and Labor Day weekend. Maybe in their first couple of years there would be more enthusiasm but now our fans are more discerning. They can watch this game at home and flip to 5 other games on ESPN3 at the same time. Now of NC State isnt a sellout maybe there is an issue. I doubt they have a problem though.

RE: Week 1 Attendance
We sold more tickets than we had seats against Who? U, and on a holiday weekend. The students came out in force despite the temptation to visit their folks. The upper deck of the east stands were sparse-ish and I know why. My group was on the east side for the game and we were so sun burnt by half time we migrated over to the west stands and squeezed into the student section. The grass hill, normally a less desirable overflow area for obvious reasons, was as packed as it's ever been, presumably for the reason I just described.

A lot of our fans are poo pooing our turnout and attributing it to a last-ditch ticket bargain our program offered. I don't really buy that. Saving 20 bucks or so has never been the difference in whether I decide to pack the car and travel three hours to the mountains and I don't think many folks who live off the Mountain could be compelled in such a petty way. People are clearly excited for the season and I'm glad 25k were there to see us play as well as we did.

Preliminary assessments of our ticket sales to Clemson are very promising. We sold out our allotment, requested another allotment of the same number, and sold out those as well. Not that it's any representative sample size or anything, but I know a TON of people going to Death Valley this weekend and only one of those group actually bought tickets from the App State ticket office (the allotments I was talking about). We just might bring 8,000 or more to Tiger Town.

funny I think App st is the only one with an attendance that doesn't deserve to be "poo poo'd"

I love our fans but you've never met a group that loves to complain as much as these folks.

enthusiasm has been crashing. I will swear up and down the ms st game killed us.

hard to watch offense + mishandled stadium amenities. for many it was their first exposure to USA football and we blew it.

even with the bad performance, if we just didnt make it "unfun" to try to go but we did.

We, like GaSt and UNCC, have no tradition of fans and Saturday afternoons on campus and cheering for our family school. It will take years to get that up to a respectable number, however, winning solves and speeds that process up. In the meantime, for us, we are dependent on the city making the experience as fun and comfortable as possible. When we/they had that opportunity, we/they failed.

But, winning cures that, and we/UNCC/GaSt haven't done enough of that to overcome any shortcomings in the stadium experience.

I have found that in this regard even older urban programs have fans that discuss the same issues. Winning does cure all but then we really have to make the experience amazing at the same time so that when we do have a downturn we aren't experiencing what USF is.

Been lurking for a while since we joined.

What would Coastal need to do to help get our attendance up when we expand the stadium?

Opponents and winning are important but engaging the community and creating a great game day experience are even more important. It will be much easier for you being in a small city. But you will have to compete with the fans of your instate P5 schools.
