What would Coastal need to do to help get our attendance up when we expand the stadium?

Offer free tickets when you buy a bucket of chicken! 05-stirthepot 04-cheers

Didn't UTSA do that?

Yes they did. One of their local boosters owns some franchises I think. So I was just playfully ragging on them a little. I was actually at their first home game in the Dome, and have made a few others. My daughter and her husband are alum and go often (season tickets). I hope they can keep up the interest here in SA.

We have 6 other FBS programs in our state.

We all have alumni that root for ACC/SEC schools, but that isn't an acceptable excuse for FBS programs. Hopefully it gets better as your program matures.

His point is this... Our program started in 2009.

# of national championships in football ALL TIME:
0 - UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest, Charlotte, ECU

# of national championships in football SINCE 2009:
3 - Alabama
1 - Auburn

We started our program at a time that Alabama and Auburn are on top of the college football world.

Each week it's a different excuse for USA's low attendance. Weather, opponent, overlapping games with Bama or Auburn, etc. etc. Wish it weren't true but bottom line is there is little support for South Alabama football from residents and especially students. Hopefully getting out of Ladd Stadium one of these days will help that. But for the time being 12,000 - 15,000 is going to be the norm at Ladd.

Agree that things get need to get better, but it is simply not the same fact pattern. North Carolina may have more programs but football is not the overwhelming factor in daily life that it is in Alabama (I'm not saying that's a good thing, BTW) and the programs in North Carolina do not command as much attention and loyalty as Alabama and Auburn, for both historical and recent accomplishments.

South Alabama will be fine and is steadily growing the base, but anytime Alabama and Auburn are playing major opponents at the same time as USA has a game, it's going to damage attendance. Not an excuse, just reality.

In the next couple of years with USA opening against two in-state FCS schools with huge alumni numbers in Mobile, along with the fact these teams will travel well, it should be a whole different scenario. It also didn't help listening to the radio pregame where they were marveling over a half-hour delay for lightning when the skies looked A-OK while the local media was predicting thunderstorms at 6:30 (never happened). Even I was beginning to ponder turning around while on my way to Ladd-Peebles because my allergies are dragging me down pretty good and sitting in a thunderstorm didn't sound like a very healthy thing for me to do.

Just my theories.

While yes, nobody is going to care about bad opponents, that thought typically is ignored the for the first game of the season with kick off enthusiasm. I find that type of apathy is for later in the season.

I have been impressed by USA as a fan base since our game in Mobile in 2010. Really going to chalk this up to opponent and Labor Day weekend. Maybe in their first couple of years there would be more enthusiasm but now our fans are more discerning. They can watch this game at home and flip to 5 other games on ESPN3 at the same time. Now of NC State isnt a sellout maybe there is an issue. I doubt they have a problem though.

I wouldn't bank on the NC State selling out. ACC opponents aren't in the same stratosphere as SEC opponents in the Mobile area. If they can get around 30,000, that will be a pretty big success.

I understand. We will get to that place. If you go to my earlier post you will see where I allude to this as well.

You cant flip a switch. It takes time. Memphis attendance was crap for a few years when they were down. They have a double digit win season and Saturday they have 45k for and FCS school. Winning cures most all but when there our no so great times, that is when you see who is a real fan. That's when people start following P5 U again.
