RE: Life in the G5
Guilty as charged. I know the difference between FCS and FBS. It's just counter-intuitive that the "championship" (FCS) level is below the "bowl" (FBS) level.

Some of us are too old to move beyond 1-A and 1-AA which was more intuitive.

I agree, some of us are too old [and have too much common sense] to arbitrarily rename everything to suit the fad of the day - and it IS illogical to place the "Championship" level below the "Bowl" level - especially considering that most of the "Bowl" games these days are totally meaningless and attract no fans

I don't like the new names just because they're harder to say. I-A/I-AA much easier to say than FBS/FCS.

DIV 4: DIV 2
DIV 5: DIV 3
DIV 6: NAIA
and so on

Can Tribal be moderator for the NCAA? This probably makes too much sense to happen.

This all makes sense but would take getting used to. I get annoyed by the uninformed on Twitter who say W&M is "D2". Now I'd have to live with us really being D3.

I also think it is premature. In 10=15 years I think the "D2" classification will fall back and merge with the "D3".

The G5 schools are chasing a dream that the P5 schools will never share and eventually the financial folly will catch up with them.

Ouch. Expecting a drop from $1M+ to $400K, then actually seeing $200K has to hurt. Anybody have a Nelson Muntz gif?

They're all convinced they're going to get an invite to the AAC soon so it seems like their (message board) fans aren't even concerned.

A less than inspiring football program and basketball program should definitely excite the AAC folks going forward.

RE: Life in the G5
Something that I took out of this latest ODU announcement which seems to be becoming a common issue - and against the conventional wisdom - is this myth that moving FCS to G5 creates some groundswell of alumni support and increased attendance.

Apparently their waiting list of 4,000+ has disappeared. Their last game in 2015 against new rival FIU came within just a couple of hours of being the first game ever at ODU that wasn't a sellout. The dwindling number of students attending or staying at the games is a growing issue, based on the comments on their own posters.

So - ODU has seen no increase in support. UMass has seen no increase. AppState has seen no increase. Coastal Carolina hasn't generated the excitement needed to support a stadium upgrade.

I see the argument ad nauseum from JMU posters - also used by others - that a G5 move will bring some groundswell of new support. Not sure why people can't actually just take a minute to gauge reality.

RE: Life in the G5
It appears a move to FBS brings initial excitement. Fans soon realize they can't find the FIUs of the world on a map and their favorite team just looks okay so fans lose interest. ODU fans can identify JMU, UR, UD, and W&M. They can drive to those away games. They know people who graduated from those schools.

Without looking, I'm willing to bet ODU's MBB attendance when they hosted us trumps any figure from their conferences foes last season.

RE: Life in the G5
#1 thing that drives attendance is winning. #2 is tradition of winning, which gets you through the times when #1 is not happening. You can't establish a tradition of winning in 5 years, and ODU is not good enough in CUSA for #1.
