Five frickin turnovers for Baker. Beast. I had a good time. Crowd did get up to about 7 or 8k but they started leaving at halftime. Onwards and upwards.

I know your being sarcastic. I'm just kind of confused as to why CUSA invited these guys. I've honestly never heard of them. Maybe it's because I'm from the Southwest and not the Southeast lol. Good Luck to the Panthers though!
We were a founding member of C-USA (got tossed because we didn't have football). We were the #2 winningest basketball program in C-USA 1.0 for the 10 years we were there with Cincy, Louisville, Marquette, etc. We have been to a Final Four, the Nat'l Championship in Men's Soccer (and are typically ranked), have been #1 in Men's Golf (finished the year #3, and are typically ranked). Top 25 media market. Good recruiting area. So I don't know, I guess C-USA just had an opening they couldn't fill and we got lucky. 01-wingedeagle

Thanks for the info! And looks like you guys are doing good so far! Good luck the rest of your season

Thanks! We also happen to be a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference and was invited back here a few years ago before the C-USA invite came.

I'm always confused by this. Are you guys "University of Charlotte?" Or "University of North Carolina at Charlotte?" I never know which school is which.

We are the Charlotte 49ers, representing the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. We hope to one day get a name change to University of Charlotte but that will have to wait for a new Chancellor. Getting football was just too much for our current Chancellor and he has no more gas in his tank.

They are a part of UNC system just like Appalachian State however unlike Appalachian they follow the normal UNC-(city) name like UNCW UNCG etc. Whether this means they are more closely intertwined with UNC Chapel Hill I'm not sure but it def. Isn't good for publicity

RE: Georgia State vs. Charlotte Official GameDay Thread (ESPNU 3:30 PM)
the UNC prefix is just a naming convention that Charlotte got shackled with because it was in vogue when the college became a university in the mid 60s. There are 17 schools in the UNC system. Charlotte has no more in common with the Cheaters in Chapel Hill than NC State, ECU, App, or even NC A&T do. All of those schools are among the 17 schools in the system.

Charlotte will eventually get the schools name officially changed. But like starting football, its going to take a grassroots effort and some political clout and a Chancellor with a backbone to do it (current chacellor is finishing his successful agenda and will retire soon). A med school (that the city itself desperately wants), is a higher priority and every bit the political fight with the Triangle powers that be. So it may be a while yet. In the meantime, athletics has already rebranded itself like so many other schools have (eg VPI, or Va Tech as everyone knows them now).

Regarding the game, Charlotte played a really solid game in every aspect except those high snaps and especially QB play. Unfortunately, thats the most important position on the field. It may be time for a change. RS Frosh Brooks Barden is the QB of the future. May be time to turn the reins over to him and live through his growing pains. Avoiding even half of those 5 TOs yesterday and that game would have been over very early.

Defensive scheme and players showed significant improvement. Yes Charlotte redshirted a lot of guys, some unwillingly due to injury. But they also spent their first two seasons under a DC who played the same passive 3-4 scheme with 2 deep safeties and corners 10 yards off the WR every snap regardless of down and distance. Teams quickly learned to take 7-10 yards per play, without opposition. Hence all the losses to mediocre FCS schools, usually by less than one score.

I feel for GSU fans. Sorry you had to be Charlotte's first victim. Here's hoping you get Turner Field and a new HC. You will have your chances for revenge, as the schools inked H&H deals for the future, though I'd love to not have to play another game in the GA dome.

I'm all for bringing a fan/poster back to reality, but this thread is kicking a conference mate when they are down.

i wasn't able to watch the game due to travel, but I hope they improve and there are some on here that will eat some crow based upon their team's performance today or when they play GASt. Let's ease up on them this weekend.

RE: Georgia State vs. Charlotte Official GameDay Thread (ESPNU 3:30 PM)
I watched the game, it wasn't pretty, at times both teams looked the part of the worst teams in the FBS, but, atleast the 49ers had the excuse of this being their first yr in the FBS. One positive for Georgia St was their defense played hard, and never quit, that's something to build on, they atleast showed some character. Its early, and only one game, but it just doesn't look like GaST has alot of talent, at times their OL just got manhandled, and the secondary had a rough time covering the 49 receivers. I think going forward, with everything that has happen to them the last 2 years, and now this loss, their coach has got to somehow keep his team positive, keep them from giving up, and, this might be the toughest thing to do, keep faith in him and the coaching staff.

your qb was 19/32 with 2 INT's. You call that solid?

your run game was decent, but you still only averaged 3 yards per carry against a ga state D that is atrocious against the run, and part of that average was because your WR's suck at blocking. I saw at least 3 plays that could have gone for 10+ yards if your receivers could block worth a damn.

Your offense scored 1 TD.

If that is solid in every aspect of the game for you guys, it's going to be a long season. You might beat Presbyterian, but that will be the only other win of the season for UNC at Charlotte.

ah, thought you meant everything was exceptional, except the high snaps, but the qb play was exceptional. Either way, I still wouldn't say every other part of the game was solid. You guys have a ton of work, and may only win 1 more game this season.

If you saw our defense last year, you'd think that side of the ball was pretty exceptional today. Started to wear down late, but overall played a pretty good game. We couldn't stop anyone last year.

QB play is going to be a huge problem this year. Matt Johnson is weak in the redzone and always has been. With better qb play and a center that doesn't snap it high every play, we have 2-3 more tds.
