I felt sorry for you today Hawghiggs. It's not a season ender, but it certainly set back the perception of the direction of the program. I didn't feel sorry for us today. We have a kid on the bench who is the son of a former AU quarterback whose passing skills are exceptional. But since Johnson was pre anointed it is hard for Malzahn's ego to admit he's playing the wrong kid. I think it's a bit late to start the backup, but if we don't it's going to get real ugly pretty soon. L.S.U. would be a baptism under fire but the kid we are starting has absolutely no fundamental skills. There is no deception on the read option, no quick reaction time, and a total inability to read the defense. It's quite possibly the worst AU QB situation of my lifetime.

I think what we learned today was that Tennessee is actually better than expected in spite of their choke. Georgia will steadily improve and they are good already. And that Alabama, A&M, Ole Miss and L.S.U. will be the ones fighting it out for the West. Miss State can't keep up, Auburn has no chance without someone to deal the ball on offense, and you guys are far from gelling.

The one thing that we have grown to be known for is power running game and we can't even do that.

Throwing the ball 53 times was a shocker for sure.

As far as Auburn goes, they will probably be OK, but it may take a loss to someone to force Malzahn to make the switch. Today's game didn't do anything to bolster confidence in my pick of Auburn as national champs.

O-line didn't create holes for the run game. BA forced to throw the ball. Absolutely terrible in the red zone. Penalties wiped out points and stalled drives. 1st quarter special teams blunder set up a short drive for Toledo. They didn't show up. Good thing is they have Texas Tech this week to right the ship.

Despite the choke and the testicle shrinking kneel down to end regulation, UT defense was quite competitive for most of the game. I think UGA is in for a fight against the Vols and that Butch has a realistic chance at an 8-9 win season.

There is a complete lack of competent QB's throughout the SEC right now.

Yeah, I was shocked when they just kneeled it. That was a Mike Shula move if I ever saw one. I do think UT will be pretty good this year though.

On the lack of QBs, I watched Ole Miss' replay last night and I think their QB looks pretty good actually. He was much better than any QB I've ever seen from the Rebels, with the exception of Eli Manning. We've got them in Ttown this week, but he makes me nervous. Our secondary has been torched quite frequently the last couple of years.

It really is amazing considering the glut of great athletes and players the SEC has at all other positions. Makes it harder to predict who comes out on top too since having a top flight QB is a huge advantage.

I think it's because in the South right now High School QB's are really just the fastest running back and having an average arm is good enough. So we don't really have the drop back passers that some regions of the country have, nor do we have the Texas brand of run and shoot QB.

Then why not recruit pocket QB's from another region if you don't have any good options in the local talent pool?

To be fair, with the total lack of dependable pocket QB's in the NFL right now, I'm surprised the league doesn't allow it's franchises to develop it's own high school level talent for future use in the league. Do something similar to European soccer teams where they invest in youth player development so that that eventually feed the first team. In this case, the players would have to play in college for a minimum of two years, then be allowed to skip the draft and enter straight into their NFL franchise that trained them. In the instance that the club passes on that chance, the player would then follow standard NFL draft processes. This could help in areas such as QB play and other positions the NFL struggles to fill.

Yeah. Much easier to run some type of option/running offense in high school. Places like CA and TX do a lot of 7 on 7 stuff in the off-season which is where their QBs really get a leg up in the passing game. That is why you see a lot of good QBs coming out of those states. Is that not taking off in SEC country?

Everywhere in the south has those 7 on 7. It's just that around a decade or so ago those hurry up no huddle offenses became all the rage. Now for the most part everyone runs those and simply don't develop under center drop back passers any more.
