OT: Tucson bowl happening this year
Saw a tweet from an idaho sports radio producer saying the Tucson bowl hAS secured a corporate sponsor and tv deal which will be announced later. The tie in involves cusa and mwc and most importantly the game will be played this season

Gotta say that's aggravating news

RE: OT: Tucson bowl happening this year
The Tucson bowl and their group submitted their bid right around the same time as Little Rock and Austin did (same day I do believe). Little Rock and Austin attempts failed to gain any traction while the Tucson group apparently is competent enough to organize and establish a college bowl game (keep in mind also that now gives CUSA seven bowl tie ins along with a secondary tie in with the Independence bowl so technically eight. Mountain West has also gained seven bowl bids now).

Austin (ergo UT) couldn't get their act together soon enough so deferred to 2016...we'll see.

If the Austin Bowl has an SBC tie in, then they're going to have to find an adequate venue . . . . . DKR will not work, unless the Conference is fine playing from the Bottom of a Big Empty . . .

It was a screwed venture from the jump.

No sponsor was lined up (though there are plenty of options in this town).
No venue lined up (and really, there's not one around that fits)
No true conferences affiliated (though the Sun belt was CHOMPING at the bit to get it)

It was an idea floated and nothing more.

I like the idea of the SBC having a bowl game in Texas but definitely somewhere more conducive for a mid major bowl (and it seems like Austin ain't it)

Why not in San Marvelous? That should be close enough to convince a bowl committee that Bobcat fans would travel to see it. Should be.

The city/community is PERFECT for a mid major bowl game. The town is used to and embraces events like crazy. The infrastructure and nightlife is already built in there. Plenty of hotels, plenty of transit options, international airport in house... it's ready.

There's just no damn stadium that's proper sized to host the game!

With our luck, they'd schedule it after all the students have gone home . . . And no one will show up for it. . . Bobcat Curse . . .

The Tucson game seems out of whack for y'all... Closest team would be UTEP and that's still a decent clip away.

But it's a good pickup nonetheless.

Eh...In reality it's just another bowl tie in that CUSA may or may not be able to fill that is a gazillion miles away from most of its member schools.

It would be no different than the Sun Belt getting a tie in with the Potato Bowl, and praying Idaho gets bowl eligibility. Pretty much what a Tuscon bowl is for CUSA. Hope UTEP is eligible.

The main thing the game in Tucson does for CUSA this year is that it insures that every bowl eligible team in CUSA should have an available spot in a bowl game. That's worth a lot since no one wants to sit at home after finishing the season as a bowl eligible team.

I'm not so sure about that one. Didn't you guys turn down a bowl game just a few years ago?

Which is exactly why I asked the original poster, why he was aggravated about it. One more bowl means two more bowl-eligible teams get their shot.

Well, maybe next year. I like both venues for Belt bowl games as both allow for easy fan travel. I have my doubts that the LR bowl will ever come to pass though.
