Question (Re: New SoCon TV deal)
The SoCon has a deal through 2021 to show every game (apparently including non-conference games) on ESPN 3.

We couldn't get anything like this when Georgia Southern and App State were still in the league.
My question: Is this a good sign for those worried about how Disney's ESPN cuts will affect G5 television?

Question (Re: New SoCon TV deal)
They won't stop showing games, they just might not pay as much. But they pay is so little they really can't save much money.

RE: Question (Re: New SoCon TV deal)
Espn is signing up as many fcs and non football conferences as they can for espn3. The payout is practically nill but it provides exposure these conferences have never had before

RE: Question (Re: New SoCon TV deal)
There is probably zero money in this for the SoCon and Southland, who both recently signed deals. The SoCon used exit fees from GSU, App, Elon, CofC and Davidson to fund the equipment needed to launch the SoCon digital network. Immediately after getting the invite to the SoCon, Mercer sent out a rapid fundraising blitz and got the targeted $75,000 raised within a week to be able to set up ESPN on campus with Mercer produced football games.
I suspect ESPN isn't paying anything rather saying if the content is produced, we'll carry the stream. I think the main impetus for the G5 programs is to have compelling games with folks in the stands, and if they do that the TV networks will reward and cover appropriately.

RE: Question (Re: New SoCon TV deal)
I think in the future sports TV is going to be like the music industry.
The "stars" will get mega bucks and G5 leagues will get small national deals for exposure to fill time slots and channels the stars don't want. The rest of the TV money will come from subscriber revenue (direct sales) or compensation based on audience (ESPN3, Fox Sports Go).
If you aren't a star in music your main income is tickets and merchandise but you get paid for song downloads and get paid by how many listens you get on subscriber services like Apple Music, Pandora, and Rdio etc.
