ASU related observations. The top LB group at ULM consists of three kids from Arkansas, none of whom were offered by ASU. Goes to show that recruiting is not a science. Also, 4 of the top 6 assistants have strong ties to ASU. Ruse was OC for a LONG time in Jonesboro, Siskey cut his teeth at ASU, John Thompson coached and grew up in the area of ASU and of course Walt Bell is the current OC.

For a defense that allowed 28 points per game and 411 yards per game last year, I for one was surprised to see 4 Arkansas State guys on the 1st team defense.

We have several guys back on defense who were very good two years ago, and barely played last year because of injury. We tied with ULM for the best DL in the league in his rankings, if that gives you any idea what we do have.

Our biggest weakness will always be the Field Goal unit. We caught Georgia Southern kicking disease.

How does the Old Guard feel about Meyerbergs comment that this is the best the Belt has ever been? Agree? Disagree?

Disagree. I think when North Texas won four in row from 01 to 04, the league was still very young. It was much improved when Troy won five in a row from 06-10. It was best in my opinion in '11 to '13 when Arkansas State won three in a row. Can't say which year was the best, but you had teams like Arkansas State, Louisiana, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, and sometimes Troy and ULM playing very good football. '10 was the windup for those years. '14 was a down year for the belt, with the two FCS move-ups leading the pack at the end of the year. Bad OOC losses, a fallen Troy, and Arkansas State and Louisiana not being quite as polished as years before lead to a lackluster '14.

'15 could be really great, but I'm not ready to say it will be the best it's ever been.
