RE: QB Kevin Ellison suspended for 2 games
We have a defensive lineman transfer from Alabama named Dee Liner sitting out this year.

So what does it take to win with a traditional offense or should I ask someone else.

Exactly! No Worries . . . I mean y'all could pull anyone in off the street to run that gimmick offense . . . .
I'm not worried. We've got fullbacks.

Hey, the gimmick might have gotten Texas State into a Bowl game last year.

It's a high school offense right? Plenty of high school QB's in Georgia to pick from.

We aren't t very good at petitions and such :)
The reason it's 2 games and not 4 is because he filed the standard appeal and completed 27 credit hours in Spring and Summer.
This also had nothing to do with "slacking". He was dealing with some intense personal issues in the fall and went over his number of allowed absences from class. It's inappropriate to publicize the nature of "personal issues" when they're not legal or academic which is why it hasn't been discussed.

Allowed absences? Is this high school or college? So he passes his exams but failed because of missing more classes than the instructor allowed? We are all homers for our team but putting the blame on the educator for not being "more understanding" of a student athlete's "personal issues" seems a stretch.
The other question that should be asked is, if the "personal issues" were so bad that he missed a lot of classes, why did he not miss any practice or games?

It's personal, so you don't need to worry about that one.
Only the coaches and a few people know all the details, and that is how it will remain.

Too bad it can't be a delayed suspension, starting around October 22nd.
Sucks though. I still think you guys can beat WVU, but it is a lot less likely now. At least you will get to see what your #2 can do.

We have a walk-on named Evan Kellison who has been getting a lot of reps in practice. Looking real good too, has kind of a familiar looking face, big, bushy mustache and wears glasses though. I like what I see out of him, we may be ok.

If anything, it gets him solid playing experience for later in the season if Ellison were to get injured again, or god knows what happens.
The guy is faster than Ellison, and is a more accurate passer. The question will be his ability to make reads and make better decisions, quicker than he has in the past. If he has improved there, the drop off won't be huge. If he is hesitant to pull the trigger on the pitch, or pitches it into the defense like he did at GT, we could be in trouble.

RE: QB Kevin Ellison suspended for 2 games
The good news about this is that GASOU knew about this for months and was preparing accordingly. WVU doesn't have much tape on our back ups and they've been preparing for Ellison not Upshaw or other back ups.
Southern will play strong and give WVU a run for their money! Still think this game is winnable!
Heck, I bought tickets and hotel room. It better stay competitive!

Personal issues are nothing to make light of, but that is a good question. Sounds like his priorities between football and school are off.

RE: QB Kevin Ellison suspended for 2 games
This is a serious blow for the start of the season but on the bright side, Upshaw played in every single game last season. The coaches knew of this during camp so I'm sure they've been preparing. Could help Ellison remain fresh for the conference schedule.

Ellison's suspension definitely makes this game more intriguing than it was yesterday. I really liked our chances with Kevin. But I also think Upshaw has some tangibles Ellison doesn't -- speed being No. 1. GATA.

I'm not making light of it, in fact I know how significantly it can impact these 18-22 year olds especially those away from their normal support structure. Just seems strange that this kid did not miss a game or practice but missed "enough" classes while having this issue(s).

Ellison's production in rushing the ball is more from acceleration, making good reads and not going down if defenders breathe too hard on him. Upshaw is even with Ellison on acceleration but isn't as good on the other two.
I think we can still beat WMU, but the only way we beat WVU now is if the defense and running backs have monster games and keep us in it. Our fans are absolutely kidding themselves saying we won't miss a beat.

College attendance policies are often much more restrictive than high school polices. Of course they're not subject to truancy law, but he may have been forbidden from missing more than three days. It's not conducive to personal issues, especially when you have a by-the-book professor.
Also, whose to say he didn't miss a practice?

I don't know if that's a fair assessment to make.
For all we know, the kid could have told coaches about whatever problem he was having, and missed just as much spring time as he did class time (or even all spring time). Now, by that same token, he could have made every practice and skipped every school. I'll hope for the best from the kid.
I'm just sticking with the notion that it's a shame for the kid, the program, and the conference. I'll drop the part about hoping he learned a lesson from it.
