Based on looking in recent years, I'm fairly certain W&M here is room and board and the others are not.

Nope. W&M instate is now over 30k for entering freshman in 2015.

The main difference is that W&M has differential tuition, meaning you won't deal with increases after year 1.

That being said, wow. 92% more that JMU?

That's what I said. 30k for instate freshmen entering in 2015.

Roughly 20k is tuition and fees, making W&M nearly twice as expensive as JMU for tuition.

Read my amended post above. W&M costs about $9k more a year for everything. That may be a more accurate way to measure the cost of attendance because that's what parents and/or students actually pay.

When your enrollment numbers are as low as ours, state funding cuts hurt a lot more. Until applications drop, though, we're probably correctly valuing tuition.

Sounds like a philosophy major; of which, I was. Only because I failed math. In that era, like 62, you had to pass either math or philosophy. Cost was $172 for tuition per semester. I would sign a promissory note before the semester started and pay it off gradually from my tips earned at the KAT. True story.

For those not in the know; I assume KAT=Kings Arms Tavern. I worked there as a waiter for three years during the school term and earned enough to pay all of my college expenses at W&M during those years. Some of the best friends I ever had were fellow waiters at the Kings Arms. At the time, there was a formal Work-Study arrangement between W&M and Colonial Williamsburg and ALL of the waiters were W&M male students. Also, the waiters were all "part time" to insure the students had time to study and attend classes. At some point in time [1970s - 80s] the trade Unions came in and unionized the food service workers for all CW restaurants and all of the student part-time waiters were fired.

I did not major in philosophy but I took a lot of philosophy courses. I, also, chose philosophy initially [rather than math] to satisfy graduation requirements.

Using the "all in" cost metric, W&M is still 45% more than JMU.

Not saying it isn't worth it, but that is a huge spread among stat institutions.

We probably knew each other or certainly had mutual friends. Was Thelma Finley the manager when you were there? I was there from the summer of 62 until the summer of 64.

As someone else said earlier, the size of W&M is a big reason for that. Since we are so much smaller, any difference in state support is going to effect the student tuition rate more than at the larger schools.

I remember Ms Finley, Stu Whitworth was the Wine Steward, I'll never forget Mrs Gerywater, the ferocious old woman behind the bars in the cashiers cage - if your customers had the effrontery to use a credit card she would throw stuff at you....

I remember that crusty old lady. I knew Stu real well. He hung around the burg for some time and died as a young man. Thelma Finley was one of the best bosses I had in my career. A great manager. Give me a call at 714-290-4867

Here's what incredible. Breaking your butt for a C. Getting lucky. People leaving school at night as a matter of routine. It was a grind. It's no wonder that most people of that era want nothing to do with Wm and Mary. Sure there are heavy hitters who write. Humongous checks. But for the majority; No will do. The truth of the matter is that the school scarred far more than it helped.

RE: OT - VA State Tuitions
That last statement is inexplicable and outrageous. There is no data to back it up, no surveys,
no major academic research to say the "school scarred far more than it helped".

Obviously the writer had a poor experience and feels "scarred" and for that we can feel sad for him. Sometimes you only get out of a school what you put into it or, if truly miserable at W&M, the writer should have left early on.

William and Mary is one of the nation's great universities and has been for a long, long time. I don't have, and nobody has, a certainty of how W&M grads feel about their alma mater, but I can say that the vast, vast majority of those I know love the university, did well in life after graduation, and support it whole heartedly.

If fundraising and percentage of grads who contribute is any measure, then the soaring yearly figures and growing percentages of contributors is a positive indication.

Another telling figure is that the soaring admission applications...now over 13,000...that continue to rise yearly means that these applicants are hearing positive things from grads they or their families know. Also, the number of children and other relatives of grads being admitted is at an all time high...surely "scarred" graduates would not be sending their offspring back to such a miserable place.

RE: OT - VA State Tuitions
I paid in-state tuition when I went to William & Mary '80-'83. I wouldn't have been able to put myself through school today like I did then. Washing dishes at the cafeteria and working at the mouse lab for rent and food money and working construction in the summer for tuition was enough to graduate debt-free back then. I'm shocked that tuition and fees for in-state students have risen so much. I wonder how much economics is impacting the demographics of the student body? You didn't have to be rich to go to W&M before, will it effectively become just another exclusive private school in terms of cost?
I guess I would go to UVA or Tech today, or I would have stayed in my parents basement for four years and finished at Mason debt-free instead of transferring to W&M.
