One of those normal situations where the Faculty Senate Chair has no influence in anything, I expect.

Well, it's been done plenty of times before.

9179 fans per game ain't exactly payin' the bills I'd imagine.

This is something I expect to see more of over the next couple years. The line will be drawn in the sand over budgets and FCoA. Schools like Akron will make that decision to drop a level or just "UAb" the program all together.

Baseball seems to have bitten the bullet. There's actually a lengthy thread there about the need to have baseball programs in the MAC.

RE: Sorta OT:Faculty Senate chair recommends University of Akron drop level in football
We still have plenty of faculty at Ga Southern who hate the fact that we restarted football in 1984 (1982). The same crowd got their panties in a wad over moving to FBS. What they don't see is that the number of students attending football games in 2014 was greater than the total enrollment in 1984. The money football gets from the state would just be extra for some other school in the system. They need to ***** at the BOR for allotting 4% of the budget when we have 7% of total state enrollment while UGA, Tech, and the Regents school each get 20% of the budget with UGA being 11% of enrollment, Tech at 9% and GRU at way less, but it's a medical school.

Some Academics live in a theoretical world and have little contact with reality.

and yet over at texas a-m the school paid 50,000 for a loss of value insurance policy so their top lineman would come back for one more year rather than opt for the nfl..how is that even legal.

I think we'll see a lot of Olympic sports dropped over the next few years before we see FBS programs drop football (a level or all together).

When does this become an actual pressure point for AD's? It seems there are remedies other than getting seats filled to meet the minimum requirement.

They won't drop down in football because if they did they would have to leave the MAC. The MAC requires each school to have FBS football and men and women's basketball. Baseball is the most costly, not required sport.

The US Olympic committee agrees with you and is worried about the consequences.

The Olympics have more to worry about then that.

As economics continue to change, and fan preferences on how to enjoy a game, the entire landscape could be different in less then 5 years.

This is only what happens when the government tries to over regulate. Title 9 has created this problem, anytime money and equality creep into the equation capitalism as a whole will prevail. Something has to get left out in the cold, college wrestling took the biggest hit over a number of years. Next sports to get axed step right up.

App's wrestling and men's soccer (especially if the SBC doesn't add a soccer member) are the most likely to be next.

I think many have forgotten the purpose of college athletics and the concept of a student athlete.

I hate that argument. To me it is like blaming a family violence victim for not getting out of the way.

Scholarship rank
FBS = 85
FCS = 63
(NFL roster = 53)
DII football = 36
Women's rowing = 20
Women's track/x country = 18
Women's basketball = 15
Women's equestrain = 15
Women's soccer = 14
Women's swimming = 14
Men's track/x-country = 12.6

Bring football closer to the professional level and bam, no issues.

Agreed. When you are trying to support a sport where there is no demand for it, you tend to run into funding issues. This is starting to creep up.

When Southern jumped up to meet the FBS scholarship limit (was in demand), we had to give scholarships over to a women's file team(was not in demand). This type of spending model will catch up to FCS and G5s. The cracks are starting to show.
