A question about a Confederate monument
It is now in vogue to express offense at any monument that was constructed to honor any Confederate leader, general or soldier.
But what about this one.
In Elmira, NY, on the site where 2500 Confederate soldiers were buried after dying while being held in the Union's Elmira Prison Camp, there is a monument to the Southern soldiers who perished in the camp. ( Monument)
For comparison, approximately 1 in 4 prisoners died while in the camp, roughly the same ratio as Union soldiers who died in Andersonville; although a lower total number.
So, to be consistent, should that monument be removed?

RE: A question about a Confederate monument
We need to erase history prior to January 20, 2009. Nothing important or good happened until then.
On second thought, maybe knowing what happened in the past is a good thing. If for no other reason, it may help us to avoid making the same mistakes.

RE: A question about a Confederate monument
I don't think any of the monuments should be taken down or altered. They are an important part of our history. One of my good friends had an great great uncle that was imprisoned there.

A question about a Confederate monument
Not one single Confederate Monument should be touched.
If the Congress of the United States recognizes Confederate Veterans as U.S. Veterans, which they do , then enough said.

Elmira was worse than Andersonville. The Union can afford to spare food rations to feed the prisoners, unlike the Confederacy which often couldn't feed its soldiers. Textbook war crime.

I always thought Camp Douglas was the Federal analog to Andersonville.

Elmira was dubbed Hellmira. It is morality rate was 25% to Andersonville's 29%. Camp Dougald hovered from 17-23%. Either way, the North has no excuse for starvation in their prison camps.

A question about a Confederate monument
Point Lookout MD was no cake walk either. However, my one of great great grandfathers survived it.
But hey the revisionist pigs from the north can write what they want and the masses lap it up.
