Old W&M Logos
Our Throwback Thursday today highlights the Tribe's logos of the past -- I personally really like the 1950s logo, and of course most of you will look fondly upon the logo of the '70s! I also wish the banner-type picture we made were made into a real-life banner...someone want to make that happen? LET'S GO TRIBE!!!

I never understood why we didn't simply keep the 1970s logo but remove the feathers

RE: Old W&M Logos
i kind of like the modern script Tribe logo. I never had a problem with the 70's logo, other than it got annoying hearing the waste management comparisons.

I don't think it's in their plans, but it would be interesting to see them incorporate the cypher on to some of the uniforms. Maybe for an alternate.

W&M alums, students, etc. know the cypher stands for William & Mary.

But nobody else seeing it on a uniform in person, but especially in a photo or on tv would even know it's two letters!

Important people outside the W&M family identify William & Mary from it. Sure, use it internally, but that should be it. First rule of marketing...get your name out there. Same reason we shouldn't have Tribe on uniforms, but, instead, the name "William & Mary".

I completely agree with this. Plus I think the "William & Mary" looks a lot cooler on uniforms (especially baseball and basketball) with how long it is and having an ampersand.

The Tribe logo has been used before and after the most recent logo, which you label as 2004. I dont believe they have given up on the "small ampersand, upside down W" logo as of yet, to my dismay.

The college put this out awhile ago, which shows all of the athletic logos over time

The Indian Chief logo was originally used back in the 1920s when the team was known as "The Fighting Virginians"
for a number of years.

The hat shown reflects that early on the W&M colors were orange and black.

Agree on using the "William & Mary," complete with ampersand. We should probably use this more often for brand awareness. The way the track team adapted it is a good look.

But why are the uniforms black? Where is the Green and Gold?

I heard it through the grapevine that we may, in fact, be using this font and logo for several of next years teams away jerseys. Good news, the away jerseys are usually green instead of black. Tribe script logo to remain in place for home jerseys. And the big news is that the Cypher is likely to make an appearance as well!

Now if only they can drape the border with feathers...

RE: Old W&M Logos
It makes so much more sense to put the name of our school on athletic uniforms rather than some contrived "team name". After all, the objective is to enhance the Brand Name of "William & Mary". Especially for away game uniforms.

A "Tribe" without feathers is meaningless and almost worse than no name at all because there is no correlation with the history of the school, the team name, and/or the athletic Mascot.

Professional baseball and basketball teams do this... home uniforms have the nicknames, and away uniforms have the city they are from.

RE: Old W&M Logos
Our "brand name", William & Mary needs to be on every uniform front; it is marketing 101. The nickname, "Tribe" is fine-- and known by W&M folks, local residents, alums and perhaps a good portion of folks who follow college sports in Virginia. But outside of those, nobody know Tribe means William and Mary...it will never be confused with The Fighting Irish, TarHeels, or Crimson Tide

With many of our games in football and basketball now televised by NBC and Comcast, our games are seen
by viewers across the USA (NBC) and East Coast (Comcast)...casual viewers watching for a minute or two
see Tribe on a football helmet or basketball shirt and never know it's W&M; same for a newspaper or internet photo.

Let's put William & Mary on all our team shirts (football can easily put it across the front of the jersey above
the number as do many teams today (including Michigan State, Nebraska, Oregon, etc.), and above the
number on the fron of the basketball jersey.
