Wink Official Comics Thread of SBCbbs
Since the other comic thread did so well I decided to open an "official" one.

So my first question for Pounce and the rest of my fellow comic enthusiasts on here is, do you enjoy any of the G.I. Joe runs? I read a lot of Joe, especially ones written by Hama and Dixon.

RE: Official Comics Thread of SBCbbs
Yes! G.I. Joe was one of the comics I grew up on. I read Special Missions religiously and went through some of (what I remember to be) the big storylines of the old ARAH series (Fred VII as Cobra Commander, issues in Borovia, Storm Shadow's attempts to avenge the Hard Master). I guess I lost track as it became all about the ninja characters...not necessarily due to the comic's quality, it just wasn't my thing anymore. I read a bit of it when Devil's Due picked it back up but don't have a great sense of the overall history. Anything you'd recommend?

(I do remember one issue of Special Missions...I want to say #6...where Leatherneck and Lifeline butted heads over Lifeline's pacifism, even as he showed himself to be a bit of a badass in taking down Horrorshow of the Oktober Guard with his expretise in aikido. That one really stuck with me. Should scrounge up a copy sometime.)

EDIT: Oh yeah! Also worth noting that I have a soft spot for G.I. Joe/Transformers crossovers, since the very first from Marvel. That latest one by Tom Scioli is crazy.

Yes actually, I have a great run to recommend! Chuck Dixon's "Cobra Civil War" and "Cobra Command."

New continuity where Cobra Commander is a title that changes hands rather than one individual. GREAT storyline, introduces a new Commander.

A couple more for my list, then!

It's awesome having folks outside my local comic shop to talk about comics with. So many people disregard them off hand without realizing how amazing the stories are! Low production costs mean more stories are given chances that would never see the light of day in TV or movie media.

"oh, I don't read." "I don't have time to read." "Comics are for kids." All bs reasons not to pick up a graphic novel. 03-banghead

Agreed! On the flip side, it's amazing how often folks talk to me on the train when I'm reading a comic. It really draws people in, usually younger people who want to know what I'm reading and want to talk Batman or Walking Dead, but there was this one older man who seemed really struck by this thirtysomething guy reading an old 80s superhero comic while most people are just listening to their phones. "You're really blessed," he told me, and I had to agree.

I've run in to that scenario myself a few times. It seems like no one is interested in picking them up but everyone is interested when it's YOU reading em. All of my TWD buds ask me questions weekly about how the comic differs during the season, but none of em want to read. I got friends who eve read the wiki page but won't read the books!

People who don't read comics are dumb. LoL

/thread

(Kidding.)

There's actually a fun conversation between my wife and me that usually starts when she compares the absolutely crap TV she watches to relax to the comics I use similarly. Sometimes, I'm reading The Superman Chronicles, and I can be like, "Well...historical significance...understanding America..." Sometimes, I'm reading Bone, and I can say, "Literary skill...pacing...human archetypes..." But sometimes, I'm reading Godzilla, and I can't say anything but, "Giant lizard...yup, pretty much the same..."

There actually may be a day when comics are evaluated on the same scale as other media. (We only have to look at the types of movies that are critically acclaimed these days to see that times can change.)

Shoot Pounce, comics look to me to be a primary source of material for Hollywood's "new ideas."

Here's hoping to see Kieron Gillen's Uber on the big screen someday soon!

RE: Official Comics Thread of SBCbbs
I just finished DC's "Green Lantern: Wrath of the First Lantern" crossover graphic novel. It was a nice thick volume that kept me reading for several days.

AWESOME ending to the Geoff Johns era of GL. I will always consider the man to be the godfather of ring slinging, sorry to finally wrap up his work here.

Anyone else read this one?

RE: Official Comics Thread of SBCbbs
So I'm rereading the entire Blackest Night story arc by Geoff Johns.

Its been two years since I first finished the main title and I really don't remember much of the story, it's like I'm reading it for the first time...almost.

As a big Geoff Johns fan I am always looking for the next big release from him, but since he's stopped writing Green Lantern for DC, I'm going back to his older stuff from the early 2000's. Rebirth, GLC Recharge, etc.

Anyone else like Johns' GL and crossover stories for DC?
