Assume in the cover they are talking about the midfield goal as the greatest goal in US history. While impressive, that goal made it 4-0 and cannot be considered the greatest ever. I'd consider the greatest ever those that were important in clutch times.
Donovan's goal against Algeria -

Wambach's goal against Brazil -

Donovan's goal against Slovenia -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvWOdloiJVw (brought it to down 2-1 on an awesome side goal that later was tied by Bradley. Lose this game and who cared about Algeria game)
Paul Caligiuri against Trinidad in 1989 to advance us to the 1990 World Cup. This may be the greatest goal because if not for it, the Americans do not play in the 1990 World Cup and are hosting 1994 without the experience previously gained. It led to our first WC appearance since 1950. -

Joe Gaetjens goal against England in 1950 for the 1-0 win for the huge upset - no video exists of the goal but there is video with the goal in the back of the net. First World CUp win since 1930 and last World Cup win for 44 years for the Americans
And of course, the Chastain goal in PKs to win it in 1999 -

Sure there are others (but not a lot) but those are amongst the biggest American goals in WC (and qualifier) history.
