Can Coastal afford FBS?
After hearing Coastal was being considered for FBS I wondered if they could truely afford to make that jump. Here are some of the numbers, you can decide for yourself. Last year student fees made up 82% of the athletic budget. The budget was 22.3 million and student fees brought in 18.3 million. The article I linked states Coastal is the biggest offender in the state of SC. Going FBS will require several more million being added to the athletic budget. Where will that money come from? Student fees paying for athletic budgets is a hot topic right now. VA just placed a cap and there's movements in other states to do the same. I'm not sure how Coastal posts for the move.

Money wouldn't be their biggest challenge. The lack of a substantial alumni base is a big deal.

Why do you care? You aren't in this conference nor are you FBS.

No further discussion required.

It's a good question no matter who asks it.

It's valid.

In the end, I suspect they could eventually become an ECU/ODU type school for SC. Problem is, SC is much poorer than NC/VA, and CCU is a long long way from either of those schools in terms of budget, fan base, academics.

But the potential is good.

I think it is a good question to ask of any school. The article is an oversimplification and uses in-state tuition to make a point. Coastal is largely out of state so there are more revenues there than many of the other state schools.

Another interesting note is the SC tuition (in-state and out-of-state) is more than neighboring states so it is difficult to compare apples to apples. For example, Coastal's scholarship costs are about 1.5 times that of App State and Coastal has fewer sports. This is also not a direct cost since the school is 'paying' itself.

Well considering who asked it and his school's motives, I am skeptical. Also considering the mistruths in his post, makes me even more skeptical.

They are not the worst offender in their state by any metric, not by total $/student or percentage of the athletic budget.

Yes, but his motives were not to ask the question as a concerned poster.

So motives are now now being judged? Interesting.

For the 100th time Liberty and the SB isn't going to happen. Liberty fans realize this and you've seen a dramatic drop in the people posting over here. I've been reading this board for a couple years now and typically only write about things I have some knowledge on. Coastal is very familiar because we've been in the same conference. I thought it's a subject that some would find interesting.

The writer in the article states they're the biggest offender.

As a Liberty fan, even if you tried your hardest, you could never convince anyone here that you are concerned about the SBC's well being when you discuss Coastal. They are not only a Conference rival, but a direct competitor.

In previous posts I've written that out of the schools discussed not named Liberty, I think Coastal has the most upside. They have some financial issues to overcome though.

RE: Can Coastal afford FBS?
Liberty is in a tough spot. They want in the SBC, I commend them for wanting in, they are also in the OVC with a couple of the schools that are being tossed around as being additions to the conference they want in. They are going to get left out and loss a current conference mate, so their current conference is also going to take a hit.

You win some and you lose some. Maybe Coastal going FBS is a good thing for LU. They could be our way into a FBS conference because we have history...or maybe not.
