Blogging from Inside the Walls of Troy (SBC Tourney Wrap Up, Day 5 and 6)
Well, That's it...it's over. As of the time of this post the Rajun Cajuns from Louisiana have qualified for the 2nd straight NCAA regional by winning the tounrament for the 2nd year in a row. South Alabama joins a plethora of 1 seeds to fail to win the title, and Troy fans can at least take grim satisfaction that they didn't have to watch their biggest rival dogpile on their field.
First, I must full apologize for the lateness of my post. I meant to do a Day 5 write up Yesterday, with a wrap up today. However, A few things came into play, including AState's elimination from the tournament, that led to me cutting my visit inside the Walls a little shorter than previously expected.
I will make 2 general statements before I get going
1. No Matter what terrible things I write about SBC Umpiring in the coming paragraphs, AState lost to the better team Saturday, and USA lost to the better team Sunday. The umpiring did indeed cost AState at least one direct run Saturday, but we lost by four, so it had no overal effect on the outcome, other than changing a couple small situations. The umpiring could have indeed killed the Cajuns today...(good teams overcome these things) It's a concern, but has no real impact on the outcome of the games thankfully.
2. I am writing this post on a haze of all sorts of interesting perscription medications. Apparently, when one has Bronchitis, it is not advisable to spend 4 hours out in the sun at a baseball game, and another 7 hours driving non stop from troy to Jonesboro (450 miles roughly) I have apologized to my family already for missing our Memorial Day gathering...but there are some things that take priority over my health, and AState Athletics is one of those things. (Again, I am on some good stuff right now, so I am not responsible for what I say...see how this works?)
I woke up Saturday Morning feeling pretty lousy. However, there was no time to ponder this new found revelation. I loaded up on over the counter meds, packed up my stuff and checked out of my Troy Hotel early. The plan was to check out, go to the park, watch however many games were to be played that day (I was hoping for 4) and then at the end, doing one of two things (1. Driving to Montgomery for a hotel preparing for an AState Championship game) (2. Driving to Birnmingham pondering the end of AState's season, spending a night, and driving to Jonesboro the next day)
I pulled into the park about 8:20. Briefly met up with Kodiak Jag for a few minutes on the coming duel. (I told him that I had confidence in the remaining pen, but that we were in trouble if our struggling starting pitcher couldnt get us 4 or 5 innings Saturday. Naturally, Adam Grantham was pulled in the 2nd inning. That meant after 5 pretty darn good relief innings considering the opponent, and the umps robbing us of a run, (Just an awful, hideous, terrible call) we ran out of pitching and South blew it open in the 7th. Despite some pathetic umpiring, we kept ourselves in it fittingly for 6 innings, even against a dominating Bembowki. But the 4 run 2 out rally in the 7th did us in, before surprisingly a true Freshman came in and pitched 2 shutout to finish the game.
Side Note: To the USA fan who complained about me badgering the umpires...I can say whatever I dang well please to SBC umps...and you can either move, or deal with it. (And Geez I was tame too)
After the game, which included a very emotional 2 run double by Zach George in what will likely be his final Collegiate at bat (You guys better hope he doen't choose to use his medical redshirt year next year.) I stayed around and met with the players and coaches for a while before deciding that ultimately, in the interest of my health, I decided to change my plans and skip the remaining games Saturday. (Had already long decided not to watch a Non ASU team celebrate on Troy's field, so no Sunday game)
That led to what was a very eventful trip, which after filling up was non stop. Despite the haze of that night, I do have some thoughts on the drive back.
1. Birmingham has some extremely confusing road signs. I took a quick drive by of UAB on my way out just to see the campus, and the resulting GPS led directions back to I22 took me on a round about way through some very interesting...ah...neighborhoods. After pausing to not ask for directions from a strange man on the street corner who I am sure was not admiring the view, I managed to eventually find my way to the freeway and home.
2. the Drive from troy to Montgomery was far, far shorter the 2nd time around. Big difference between it being the end and the beginning of your trek
3. The normal hour between Memphis and Jonesboro (As you pass the entering Red Wolf country sign) a drive I have made almost daily for a year now, seemed to take forever. Thus I apologize to Troy fans for complaining about the stretch from Montgomery to Troy.
4. I did not get lost in Tupelo this time. Yay Me.
I arrived back in Jonesboro about 8:00, grabbed dinner, some mover over the counter meds, and conked out within an hour and a half.
On that note, I do have some final thourghts on what I witnessed this week inside the Walls. Some criticisms, and some compliments.
1. Troy supports its Trojans. There is signage all over town, and despite being convinced I was going to be inundated by Burner or Bama junk, I did not see much other than the odd car. I saw far more Bama when I got to Birmingham. The City wants and needs the University to do well, and thus needs the Athletic Department to do well. While this seems normal to some, it wasn't thtat long ago that many SBC schools resided in towns that barely tolerated them, much less supported them.
2. "What the Hell are you doing in Troy" should be a hashtag trending on Twitter. It took some explaining for everyone to understand, which furthers my belief that many fans stayed out of town and drove in this weekend. I saw a lot of Cajun gear in Troy, but outside of a couple UTA fans at my hotel, and Texas State gear at another hotel, I saw very little team gear for others schools, including AState (Who I know stayed in Ozark this week)
3. Despite an eventful Tuesday in which my GPS got me lost in an extremely dark neighborhood about 9:00, I found the city to be very easy to navigate without needing a GPS. Gas Prices were affordable, and the food in town is very affordable.
4. Traffic on the Main road in town is pretty bad late in the afternoon. Stop Lights can take forever if you catch them wrong.
Facility Wise, Troy has a beautiful, but small baseball stadium. It was smaller than I thought it was, and showed me that AState has a ton of work to do if we are even going to stand a chance to catch Troy in the facilities race in baseball. The troy athletics department was extremely helpful, and generally tried to make the event an overall success, despite the 2 and Q out of the hosts.
Baseball Wise: ULL and USA were clearly the two best teams in this tournament, despite the Wednesday loss to Texas State. I also felt that AState and Texas State were clearly 3rd and 4th best, and didn't see them as fluke semifinalists. Especially AState, which manhandled both Georgia Schools.
Cajuns brought the most vocal fan base for the entire tournament, but South picked up more and more fans as the weekend arrived as expected. UTA had the smallest fan base overall. Georgia State had a small group, but they were loud. USA's dugout talked the best smack of the weekend. Credit Calvi for recognizing our Saturday starter struggled to deal with hecklers, and put his dugout to use. I would have done the same thing.
Cajuns had the cockiest fans as usual. Predicting titles in the 3rd inning of the Troy game...and delivering them. Nice group as well...typical for Cajuns. Georgia Southern had the most appreciative group of fans there, aplauded plays by both teams. Cajun fans were the only other fan base I saw to do that.
It's a shame App State couldn't make it.
Overall, it was a well run tournament by Troy, despite hiccups with the music and some early intercommunication, the Troy Athletic Department put on a great show. Lets be clear, Troy is a town is not where you will be taking the family for a week long vacation, but for a one or two day trip for a football weekend, it's not bad...and troy knows how to tailgate. Texas State, you're up!
