Is this a serious question? For the vast majority of participants; of course it does. For the media I don't think so. I'm fairly close to a group of current D1 college players and have been for fifteen years or so. They ALL graduated from the univ of California. We read about the sensational cases. That's not a reflection of what's up.

One thing we know for certain: the student-athlete is alive and well at William & Mary and academics do matter.

Yes indeed. Not just here, but for most people in most cases.
