Fox should treat it like it's a huge game. #1 broadcast team. Extended pregame show, etc. Fox needs a huge rating for that game to have any shot to get the Big Ten package.

Great point...we'll see what they do.

also mens soccer made final 4. PC usually performs respectably in learfield cup

Soccer is not popular as well. The ratings are not really there for Lacrosse, college hockey and so forth. Most of the NHL hockey appears on NBCSports which not everybody have. Not everybody have FS1 either. Several small cable companies dropped all Fox channels. The cable companies who can not afford these prices could wind up dropping all sports network which includes channels that are not sports. For us in Suddenlink subscribers. All Disney/ABC/ESPN were bundled as a whole package which includes the SEC and Longhorn Networks. Suddenlink wanted to just have ABC Family, ESPN, ESPN News, ESPN 2, ESPN Classic and all Disney Channel stuff. But, Disney refuse Suddenlink's offer and say either have it all or we will cut you off. There is gonna be a fight between all providers who will stand up for their subscribers soon because they could lose business and all that because of the heavy handed tactics from these companies that provide these channels. Already several small providers are standing up against these companies.

what does popularity on tv have to do with your original statement? you said 3 schools from the BE havent done much in sports lately. it has been pointed out that in PC's case they have been successful on national stage. What exactly has Fordham done again? Mercer. Lipscomb and Belmont? i would bet a majority of people dont even know where those last 3 schools are located

Fordham went to the FCS playoffs the last 2 years. Their basketball been to the post season the past few years.

Mercer went to the basketball playoffs the past few years. They upset a P5 school in the tournament this year. Their baseball made the post season. Their football have been above .500 ever since they re-started their programs.

The other have not had the success as the others yet, but they are getting there.

In the last 4 years, Fordham has won: 10, 7, 10, and 10 games. What post season have they been to?

And what P5 school did Mercer upset in the tournament this year?

Mercer upset Duke in 2014 tournament.

My bad. Georgia State Upset Baylor this year, but it was the year before. Time flies.

fine about Mercer but that was a 1 time deal.

What about your moronic comment about Fordham. It's been 23 years since they've been in the tournament.

1) on court performance, where we are a B with a good RPI and a bad tournament performance
2) compelling interest, where we are a C- with a narrow appeal and no interesting dynamics

You keep saying this despite (a) Frank's P12 title game evidence showing that being on FS1 has a big downward effect on ratings compared to being on ESPN, in other words the network has a big impact on game ratings, and (b) no evidence to back up your bizarre assertion that Georgetown vs Villanova has less appeal because it is catholic vs catholic than say Villanova vs VCU would have.

Come on even you agree that ratings are driven by entertainment value.

Entertainment value in sports has always been driven by some sort of rivalry affiliation that people can either attach to or vicariously watch. The more understood and palpable the proxy the more interest in the rivalry.

UCLA fans don't call USC University of Spoiled Children for no reason. Inter service rivalries have long been part of the lore of Army Navy etc. Oklahoma/Texas is largely about a rivalry those two states. Yankees/Red Sox is a proxy for the rivalry between Boston and New York.

Now perhaps Georgetown/Villanova is a proxy rivalry between New York and Philly as stated by Frank. He at least provided some plausible hook for a conference that otherwise looks terribly homogenous.

You keep acting as if your rivalry-angle theory has validity, such that others have to provide alternatives to it or else it stands.

But it doesn't: there is no reason to believe that Georgetown-VCU is a more compelling TV game than Georgetown-Villanova.

Quite the opposite, as the latter matchup has a long history and is between two established brand names.

Fox needs to promote the hell out of that game. They need to advertise it heavily on Fox broadcast, Fox News Channel, FX, and every other channel they own, so that everyone who watches one of those channels knows that Michigan-Utah is on FS1 at 8:30 ET on Sep. 3.

Will they do that? Probably not. Fox has been shockingly clueless in its management of FS1. So what will likely happen is that Michigan-Utah gets an 0.5 rating on FS1, while the ESPN game in the same time slot (TCU-Minnesota) gets a 1.5, and Fox's chances of acquiring a significant Big Ten package for FS1 will dwindle down to zero.

Yeah- it's such a key though that I don't know if FS1 will mess it up. I'm sure the Big Ten has told them in no uncertain terms how important that is.

Considering they are paid like Nd's nonfb membership in the ACC I would assume they are happy with the money.

I also assume that the C7 much like the Big 12 and PAC 12 want FOX & FS1 to pick up more content and casual viewers as long as we are playing on it. Right now it's hurting ratings due to people not having it on the mental list of channel surfing when they are looking for sports.

Fox Sports just announced a deal with the NHRA which has been on ESPN for 10+ years. They will air 4 events live on regular Fox and and the remaining events on the schedule will be aired on FS1 with replays on FS2.

SMU had 9 games on ESPN2, 3 on ESPN, 1 on CBS, 5 on ESPN U, and 7 on CBSSN. Every conference game was on ESPN2, CBSSN, ESPNU, or ESPN.

Right now, ESPNU is in only about 10 million fewer homes than FS1 is right now. And ESPNews is only about 13 million behind FS1 is right now.
