RE: Marcus and the NBA Draft
So, only 5 mins of floor time for Marcus tonight...0-1 from the field.

Nice article in Globe:

RE: Marcus and the NBA Draft
Very hard to tell much from his time on the court outside of the fact that such little time in a summer league game probably doesn't bode well for any slim chance of him making the active roster.

I actually think this is ok. I think a year or two in Europe or D-League could be very good for him.

What little I saw fit my expectations. He showed a couple of times that he can create his own shot, even at this level. On defense he needs some growth.

RE: Marcus and the NBA Draft
I would never discount Marcus. He is dedicated to the game, he strives every day to get better, and he has
the natural talent to make it.

More than anything, there is Marcus himself. A top quality young man, who, lest we forget, showed what kind of man he is by spurning all the big-time college programs who one: (illegally) tried to have him renege on his W&M commitment before he came here and two: came after him to transfer after his freshman and sophomore years.

What he did for our program can never be underrated.

I fully expect to see Marcus in the NBA..if not this season, then in a year or two.

There's definitely a major learning curve even in the Summer League. UNCW grad Keith Rendleman, who HAS been playing pro ball in South Korea and Switzerland, is participating in the Summer League with the Hornets this year. His first outing he had 1 rebound, 2 fouls and 2 turnovers in 8+ minutes. The struggle is real.

Given time, Thornton will show what he can do. Defense will be where he needs to show the biggest improvement. I was watching this contest on NBA TV and noticed on one particular play him getting blown by by one of Utah's guards like he wasn't even there. Not a knock against Thornton, just the reality of playing some of the best college players in the country all in one place. Once he gets used to the pace he'll be able to do his thing.

That specific play is one that stuck out in my mind.

I'm not discounting Marcus at all from making it to the NBA, I just think he has some things that work in Europe/D-League will help him improve to get him there.

That play was tough, but it was while guarding Dante Exum who was probably one of (if not the) best players on the court last night. He played pretty close defense during the other possessions, but the offense didn't seem to include him at all. His one shot was a self created one, and the other offensive possessions he played the ball never really came near him.

Mostly agreed on offense. Although there was another play where he created his shot, had a lane for a patented wide open Marcus pull-up jumper or maybe lay-up, and there was an off-ball offensive foul.

Yeah Jordan Mickey ruined that whole play. Which was a shame because it looked like a classic Marcus play. I was happy to see Marcus take the ball up court for a few possessions but it didn't really lead to more scoring chances for him. I thought his defense was fine. He only had that one play where he got blown by. Other than that I don't think his man scored.

That's probably fair. In 5 minutes of play, it's hard to not always gravitate to one glaring moment. But I think you're right, mostly he defended fine.

I'm recording tonight's game too, although probably won't watch it until tomorrow night. Hope he gets more playing time.

Yes, its definitely unfair to point to just that. But when you're a guy who really has to shine to make the roster it's a play they can easily point to in order to send him to the D-League/Europe (which would not at all be the worst thing for his career). I'm rooting hard for him to start lighting it up like the college days so people will be clamoring for him to make the final 12.
