I guess I am just not in that income bracket yet. Australia plane tickets on 4 week max notice are $2000 for coach seats, $7k for business class for that 21 hour flight. You spend almost 2 days on a plane on top of that. I could think of a lot of things $5k at the minimum could go toward.

And its going to be around Christmas too. Which is super high season for Australia.

I just got back from there. Even with the 'better' exchange rate...its still very expensive on the ground. Want a 12 oz bottle of soda from a mini mart? 4.50 AUD. A mid range meal? 70 AUD. A pack of cigs? 26 AUD.

There are a couple of new airlinks DFW and IAH will both have non-stops to Australia/New Zealand by the end of the year.

$7k for business class? More like 11k. But Air New Zealand has a nice option that is cheaper. Buy three back of the plane seats for two persons. They have rows in coach that convert into beds easily sharable by two people.
