Uncertainty remains for Navy over New Year's Six bowls, Army game
Quote: No decision was reached Wednesday by the College Football Playoff commissioners on whether Navy would remain eligible for the New Year's Six bowl games after two days of meetings at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas in Las Colinas.

"We had a robust discussion," College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said. "We need more discussion."

Some commissioners are concerned over a scenario in which Navy -- which will enter into the American Athletic Conference this fall -- is ranked high enough to earn one of the New Year's Six bowl bids and then the following week loses to Army or posts an unimpressive victory.

As the current policy dictates -- as did the BCS rankings system -- that game result would not count toward Navy's final ranking, penalizing other teams that would have earned a New Year's Six bowl bid if the game was factored in.

The College Football Playoff policy states the rankings compiled by the committee on selection day (Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015) will be the final version for purposes of identifying the teams in the playoff.

The highest-ranked champion from the Group of Five conferences (AAC, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt) receives a bid to either the Peach or Fiesta bowls this season.

One option presented by AAC commissioner Mike Aresco is if Navy was the AAC champion and lost to Army, then the next highest Group of Five team would simply swap bowl spots with Navy, sources said.

However, that could be problematic for a number of reasons. Not only would it impact Navy put would delay two bowls from selling tickets to two fans bases until Dec. 12 with the bowl season beginning on Dec. 19.

Sources said some of the commissioners believe any teams that play after the final rankings are released should be ineligible from playing in one of College Football Playoff's six bowl games.

Hancock said if the management committee makes any changes involving the playoff it is determined as a "consensus."

"There is not a vote, Hancock said.

Aresco, whose conference will hold a league title game for the first time this year, has been lobbying for support from the other commissioners.

The Navy-Army contract with CBS has four years remaining through the 2018 season, requiring the game to be played on the second Saturday in December.

Last month Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk told ESPN moving the Navy-Army game to another date is not an option.

"It needs to be a stand-alone game," Gladchuk said. "That game has become a focal point for America. It's just a wonderful event, an opportunity to showcase what America is all about.

"I'm hopeful [the committee] will find a solution and I'm confident they will."

The College Football Playoff final rankings are released on the Sunday following the first Saturday in December. Moving the rankings back another week would delay the other 30-something bowl pairings, putting an even-greater hardship on fan bases traveling to bowls.

RE: Uncertainty remains for Navy over New Year's Six bowls, Army game
It seems simple for Navy, Army and CBS to just move the game.

I realize it's nice for ratings to have the Army-Navy Game on a day without other college games, but why not Thanksgiving weekend? Isn't that where that game used to be? Or am I mistaking?

Somebody on this board suggested playing the game on Veterans Day each year. I can't think of a better idea.

No one in the Power conferences will vote to change the date of the Army_Navy game. They know doing so puts their activities on display for those in Congress who support the Army-Navy game. The game will stay as is and the other G5 conferences will have to deal with it. Mark my words. this game will not be moved.

Bottom line - Navy / Army / CBS all refuse to move the game (at least until the current contract is up), then Navy forfeits it's "potential" opportunity to play in a New Year's bowl for the next 4 years. Once the CBS contract is up, move the date of the game, because it ain't about the spectacle of the Army / Navy game anymore, it's about what's best for the conference that Navy decided to join.

RE: Uncertainty remains for Navy over New Year's Six bowls, Army game
I really think they are making this too hard. I get it would be embarrassing to put Navy in and then have them lose, but while Navy doesn't has one fewer opportunity to lose and hurt their case, they also have one less opportunity to win and help their case. I say just count them as you do everyone else, but they'll be slightly dinged for one fewer win (usually not a huge deal, but in a very close battle might be).

How often is it really going to be the case Navy gets put in and then loses to Army anyway. I know you have to plan for it, but if it happens once in 20 years that would be surprising.

I for one wish that this game was the start of the Football season. It's significance to me is drowned out by all the Bowl Clamor. Let this Great American Game be the Face of College Sports. It would be a good thing. 04-rock

Exactly how often do you see Navy ending up 10-2 or better after winning the AAC conf champ game. remembering that they play ND yearly.
It is a problem that is mostly a moot point.

Just play the game as the first game of the entire football season. It's not that hard to comprehend.

It would be great for CBS too. Imagine how they could advertise for that game. Many people would be off work and could have football parties with their bbq'ing friends.

The halftime ceremony could be one of the best not only in college football, but would be eclipsed only by the SuperBowl halftime show. Except the Army-Navy halftime show wouldn't be all glitz like SuperBowl....Get the CIC or Sec Def out there for a speech....Get a historian out there for an inspiring speech.

Veteran's Day(-ish) is Army-AF.

Navy-AF is in October
Army-AF is in November
Army-Navy is in December

Army-Navy Saturday primetime the Saturday before the first Thursday of the season. It's a win-win as it'll get all the attention and CBS can have a highly rated draw on primetime where they can sell highly priced ad space.

This is what needs to happen. What are the chances Navy is in the Access Bowl then loses to Army, not very high. Second what about Army? Should Army not be allowed to be in the Playoffs? What if Army was 11-0 with wins over Penn State, Notre Dame, and Duke and our placed in the playoffs. Are they not allowed because of the Army-Navy game and what if they lose? Why don't they just let it be and if Navy does make the Access Bowl then has to play Army let it happen. They will most likely win the game against Army if they are that good that year. And if they do lose big deal they still should deserve the Access Bowl since they are Navy and would probably win the Access Bowl if they lost to Army in the Army-Navy game. Army-Navy game should not count against them and just be seen as an extra game at the end of the season that is just a bonus that can't hurt or help them since its after the final ranking.

RE: Uncertainty remains for Navy over New Year's Six bowls, Army game
veterans day is a set date and would hurt the game and the students athletes

playing on like a tuesday would kill the ratings...and would hurt navy...it works for the MAC because the 1 mil viewers is better than any other option, army navy would give up 2/3 million viewers moving it to tuesday...and for competiton everyone in the mac has adjusted t otuesday games for november, so no one is at a disadvantage ...navy could potentially have a game on tuesday or wednesday and haea game 3 days laters...(you can say they can try to schedule around that but as seen with cincy this year, sometimes its out of your controll)

you are blind and foolish if you think the army/navyy game being moved is what is best for the conference.....

completely blind and foolish....the arm/navy game will be blended completely into the aac tv contract when their tv deal expires with cbs, in time for the 2020 renegotiations

does it create a bit of confusion? sure....but it will be the biggest leverage we have for the tv negotiaons in 2020.. no offense to us, but our content is good but passable, the army/navy game is a staple and wanted by every major network especially on a weekend by itself....*us walking into negotiations* you want the army/navy game, you can have it but you have to give us a great price on everything else

why do you think the MWC conference is the conference pushing for this the hardest to be moved....do you honestly think their commish cares about the less than 1% chance that navy wins the conference, ranked the top of the G5 and then not good enough to defeat a perpetual bottom feeding army? (who navy has dominated over the years).. he suggested navy shouldnt qualify at all for any major bowls if the game is kept there and actively lobbyied for it, something he knows we'd never allow.. he is making a power move to devalue the AAC by devaluing Navy... (notice how he called out navy but not army, who techincally can still qualify for a major bowl and still have to play navy, or that he didnt have a problem with it last year when navy was indy and could have gotten an atlarge bid and then techincally lost to army)

RE: Uncertainty remains for Navy over New Year's Six bowls, Army game
Ummmmm why does everyone on here talk like the Army-Navy game in December is some long standing tradition set in stone?

This game has changed dates over the years for television ratings... The game use to be played on the Saturday after Thanksgiving or the old last day of the season... as football schedule began to expand it was shifted to the first Saturday of December... it wasn't until 2009 that the game switched to the SECOND SATURDAY of December to be alone on the schedule and away from Conference Championships that had shared the date for several years to boost game ratings for CBS.

I'm not saying it should be moved, I'm just saying - tradition isn't why the date is what it is... CBS tv ratings are! Army and Navy will do whatever the television partners want to ensure the best value.
