OT: JMU's new bball arena
Saw this over on the JMU page:

http://www.jmuconvo.com/

Looks like a great place to play. I only went to one game in the current convo, but I was not a fan. Makes me excited for when the Hall gets a facelift.

Interesting that the page says it is contingent on donations, and puts the onus on JMU supporters.

Pretty nice. And it can be used as a nice recruiting tool whether it's built or not. Similar to the football coaches selling recruits on moving to FBS which may or may not really happen.

I'm sure it will be presented as something necessary to move up to an FBS conference by alums. I think it is a beautiful concept for an arena badly in need of updating.

It looks like it will be a brand new facility, and they're still deciding what to do with the old one.

I really like the virtual fly through, it would be neat if that existed or could be put together for the Zable improvements. Don't get me wrong, the four artists renditions on zable.wm.edu are a great start, but it would be fun to see what the new concourse area, suites, concession areas may look like.

I think they hit on one thing that, I feel, will become an important part of all future Arena layouts. That is the "Student pre-Game Activity Area".

If you are not a Power 5 school, with a solid B-Ball program, it is always an effort to get students into the arena. Having a pre-designed "activity area" for pizza parties, cafeteria buffets, pre-game band parties, etc., is becoming ever more important.

If we are going to redo the Hall, I hope they have considered working something like this into the plans. Good for JMU.

Notice the practice facility as part of the new arena. I think our current practice facility plans should be scrubbed until we decide on new arena or renovation of arena. It would be cheaper to incorporate them into a single new facility if that is what we will do.

Our practice facility will be adjacent to the Hall. I don't know if it will literally be built against the Hall, but my guess is any space between it could be made into some kind of foyer or something. At the very least I assume there will be underground tunnels that connect it. My thought (based off of nothing other than my gut) is that we will go for the refurbishment route. If we were to rebuild the whole thing I think a comprehensive building may make more sense, but the cost for refurbishment seems more manageable; and based off of Richmond, there is real potential for a great product.
