A travel partner for APP is needed to save money.
The playoff money is capped at twelve but the payout is per team.
So having less than twelve for football cost the conference a million plus.

So this is what I would do if I was running the Belt.

Find an Olympic sports partner for APP close to Charlotte or at least close to APP.

Pick up UMass for football only
Pay all three football only members half shares of the CFP.
Split the share and a half withe the nine full members should be about two million.
Everyone keeps their APR money of course.
Give the football only members a four year revolving contract.

Down the line if JMU ,MSU and UTC or Coastal has built up to an FBS level then add full members.Helps exposure turns the heat up on expansion candidates increases exposure in unlikely places.
How fast would Coastal be able to make the jump to FBS? As there has been no formal announcement from Coastal, and EKU, JMU and Liberty have, what time frame is needed for Coastal to meet the requirements for facilities and teams? I know their FB attendance would have to double to meet the 15k minimum.
They have brand new baseball ,basketball ,softball and tennis facilities.
The stadium was designed to easily expand to twenty thousand .
Attendance was pretty good last year and they are addressing their parking problem.
Their baseball ,golf ,soccer and football teams are ranked a lot.
Money could make it happen pretty quick but probably five plus years.
Liberty has great facilities and is ready now you guys will probably even have varsity hockey.I only listed Coastal as a future candidate.

Having less than twelve for football leaves CFP money on the table.
U Mass could solve that without making a permanent move that turns out to be a mistake.

I have seen Coastal Carolina mentioned before but have really seen nothing from them that they are interested in FBS.

Really the only teams I have seen in the eastern part of the conference who have expressed a desire to move up are Eastern Kentucky and Liberty.

Coastal has a great upside. Improving facilities and strong in FB and several other top tier programs. In last year's football game against, their biggest rival Liberty, to have an undefeated season and potential final season at #1 ranking, they drew around 8,000 attendance. It arguably was their biggest game ever. Lots of work there needs to be done.

Their head coach is a very interesting man and would be a wise hire as AD once his coaching is complete. There is still one large looming factor and that is competing with SEC South Carolina for ink and airtime. SC cast a large shadow in SC. Winning against note worthy teams will improve that.

It would seem if Costal announced today they were going FBS that would be a 5 year+ plan. They are a good FBS candidate in time.

Jax St. Announced and has been preparing for a move for years prior to any mention of eku.
There hasnt been a lot of buzz lately however we have been steadily improving facilities each year beginning in 2010 with burgess snow field.

Pardon my ignorance here, but what is a snow field?

Or is that the guy's name? Burgess Snow?

Field is named for two different persons.

Paul Snow & Bill Burgess.

I don't think the SBC can do anything until C-USA makes its move - unless if C-USA plans on losing another member, adding a school from FCS, or staying at 13 in football.

If the Sun Belt needs two members, EKU and JSU may come in as a pair - one for a travel partner for App and the other to replace USA/Troy/GSU/GS.

If a western member leaves I think Missouri State will be their replacement, although I could see someone like Sam Houston sneaking in to replace them.

Or perhaps UTA has something they haven't told us yet . . .

First, you are assuming a lot if you think C-USA is going to come to an agreement on adding another program at this time, much less one in the East. Anyone of one them need 10 votes and right now they don't have it.

Second, the same divide exist in the Sun Belt Conference. I see no way your package deal is going to work without compromise on New Mexico State. Waiting on one FCS program is problematic, but two? That is not going to happen, there are not enough votes from Western members to get that done period.

Per a friend in a CUSA athletic department.

There are three "possible" paths to 10 votes.

1. The five nothern members of CUSA East concede they aren't getting JMU or Liberty in a 14 team alignment and agree to a compromise candidate who will fit in the West with USA seen as most likely.

2. There is no concession on JMU/Liberty but rather a compromise of adding one along with two more in the west to reach 16.

3. FIU and FAU don't share in the love for JMU and Liberty and want a school to bridge between them and the rest of the league, which then has the potential to create a log-jam only broken by going to 18.

His bet for the outcome? Raised voices and better than even odds that no one gets to 10.

That's pretty much what I continue to hear, there is no consensus right now.

I don't think there would be any support in CUSA to go to 16 or 18. I am not at all sure if UAB is shown the door that they would even go back to 14.

Any talk of 16 or 18 seems pretty far fetched.

I think at worst the Sun Belt loses 1 member to CUSA and with JMU and Liberty out there it is possible one of them gets the CUSA invite.

Ya - I think 16 is the super-nova membership point of conferences.
If they reach 16, they're more likely to explode.

We only have one exampled - the WAC.
It would be interesting to see if it happened again.

I just don't understand the rationale to get to 16 or 18, unless it is at worst a mid-tier P5. With the NCAA money capped at 12M/team, they are significantly cutting the payout, while saving little on travel, and (short of the mid-tier P5) none of the potential adds are going to be significant enough to move the needle in television dollars.

The Sun Belt won't be adding any school. No one has been able to build a consensus.

We go back to the discussions at last year's meetings. Talking about adding a school for the sake of getting to a number.

With due respects to fans of the schools who would want in, no one school adds enough to the league to warrant consideration at this time.

With deregulation on championship games, there is no reason to add another football school.

Eleven isn't a good number for olympic sports, but the league won't go out of business because of it.

My guess is you are likely right. Much changed with the new less than 12 need for a CCG. It diluted the need of the SBC to take the top FCS prize, JMU, and even bring Liberty into discussion. Liberty with their aggressive posture to achieve FBS will continue their quest. JMU may likely be on the outside looking in, and a perpetual CAA member unless an open happens with the UAB fiasco, or CUSA expansion occurs.
