Baseball Preview: #25 UNCW Returns To Conference Play At Hofstra
HEMPSTEAD, New York – Twenty-Fifth-ranked UNCW returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game series on Long Island against Hofsta. The series open on Friday with a 3 p.m. start on Friday at University Field.
The Seahawks had their lone mid-week game canceled on Tuesday at East Carolina due to rain.
UNCW entered the national rankings this week when it debuted at #25 in D1Baseball.com's top-25 rankings. The Seahawks are also receiving votes in both the NCBWA and USAToday/Coaches polls.
Last weekend, UNCW raised its record to 8-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 25-8 overall with a sweep of visiting William & Mary at Brooks Field. The Seahawks opened the series with a 10-1 win on Friday and clinched the series win on Saturday with a 5-1 win. The sweep came after UNCW rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 5-2 deficit.
UNCW ranks 14th nationally with a .306 average and is 23rd in scoring, averaging 7.1 runs.
Hofstra stands at 3-9 in the league and 13-19 overall entering the weekend. The Pride whipped New York Tech, 13-1, and blanked Manhattan on Wednesday, 7-0.
The Pride has taken each of the last two series from the Seahawks, but trail the all-time series, 28-9.
The Seahawks will have to keep an eye on freshman Steven Foster, who leads the HU lineup with a .377 batting average, 27 runs scored and 14 stolen bases.
Nick Monroe will make his 10th start of the season on Friday and will be followed by Ryan Foster and Josh Roberson on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The Pride will counter with Bowie Mattison, Alec Eisenberg and Nick Kozlowski.
