What's the story behind Alabama going to Lafayette?

IIRC, that was a 2 for 1 deal. I do recall walking up to the stadium late that afternoon and seeing a double rainbow in the distance. That was the highlight unfortunately.

I think we did a 2 for 1. We guaranteed a certain amount to get them here. I was there, it was a close game. 22-6, but it was closer than the score. We fumbled at the 1 but held them to 5 field goals

I don't remember if that's when we were Independent

IC, I had the pleasure of seeing all 3 of those games in person. The two in Alabama were split between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Do not recall which game it was, but in one we were leading at the end of the 3rd quarter (Brian Mitchell at qb). When Bama finally took the lead, I was amazed at the noise the crowd suddenly made, only then realizing that we had silenced them most of the game.

I also recall that both flights back were a couple of the roughest I have ever been on and I have done a lot of flying over the years.

You would think that ASU would have been in our Top 10 in the late 80's when Brian Mitchell was our QB who was a stud and will probably end up in the NFL Hall of Fame. He played for the Redskins and leads the NFL in return yards.

Well his last game he played at Cajun Field was against Arkansas St and you think there was going to be a big crowd because he drew good crowds mainly to see him

I remember expecting a large crowd but it didn't happen, but he did go out a winner in one of the best games and finishes. Instead of going for the tie after pulling to within 1 on the last play.

We made the 2pt conversion and were celebrating but there was a 15yd penalty, we had to do it again and made it again

So, Arkansas St shoulda been our record crowd at that point to see Brian Mitchell play

When I lived in Dallas, I went see the Cajuns play at UTA around 1980. Thanks for the info

I actually took a couple of Electrical Engineering and a Fortran programming classes there in 1980.

Dallas Morning News headline the following Sunday:

"UTA's Mavs do little moving as Cajuns rage to 30-13 victory"

7,156 saw UTA's fifth loss in as many tries at their new stadium which opened that year.

What did you think of the stadium then. I know what it is now, but am curious what independent folks think of the stadium, especially when it had that new car smell.

That score sounds familiar, That was the game we went to. I had a couple of my friends drive up for that game. That was the stadium I went to. It was small but we actually didnt think about of the stadium then. We actually sat by the cajun band below the press box.

Now that I think about it, why were we sitting on the side with the press box. We had a blast, I remember that much.

Now I know why, because my one friend sat in the press box because he had a press pass because he wrote for the Lafayette newspaper. This is the Stadium I went to. Not sure if it was the new one or not but it sure brings back good memories.

No we didn't. We had the regular-season record for App in 2014.

During the App game, we had like 24,800, but that only broke the regular season attendance record. The all time record still stands, but I say we beat it this coming season.

I think that Cajuns-Southern game could have had 3K-5K more folks but the fire marshall made them stop selling GA tickets to sit in the grass endzones. The seating capacity at the time was 31,000 with both end zones being completely grass, and before the new south end zone seating was added last year to increase the "official" capacity to 36,900.

Well, every stadium back then was smaller. Cajun Field sat just 26,000 then when it opened. Now for sure, it was still the smallest stadium in the conference, but it was one of the more amenity-filled and player-friendly when it opened.

It will need a lot of work for it to get up to modern FBS standards. But I like the more intimate atmosphere.

we actually didnt think about the stadium size back then. We just had a good time. Back then it was more about the game than stadium sizes.
