Predictions for day 1 of Sun Belt Men's Tourney (Thur, March 12)
This will be largely based on my observations of the 4 teams when they came to Ga. Southern to play so I welcome others who may have seen these teams more than I have but here goes:

Texas St. vs. Texas-Arlington:
Texas-Arlington has a good bit more fire power, but in a low scoring game Texas St. could win. Texas-Arlington seems to play best in a fast moving running game. Texas St. seems to play best in a slower defensive type game. When it is said and done I think UTA has more athletes and should win. I will say UTA by 8.

UALR vs. South Alabama:
My take on this may be colored by what I saw of both teams in Statesboro but UALR is much like Texas-Arlington in that they seem to play best in an uptempo game. UALR does not have much on an inside presence but has a number of good shooters. South Alabama also has some good shooters and seem to have more of an inside game. This one could go either way but I am picking UALR by 5.

Interesting note, USA swept UALR this season, but both games were played in January. Give me UTA by 12 and USA by 3. UALR was playing their best ball a couple weeks ago, but are coming off back to back losses to UTA and ULL.

I dont have much confidence in uta winning. the mavs have a few guys hurt and seem to be on a downward trend..I think it is txst game to lose..

Bout the only folks who have confidence in UTA are those who don't follow the team closely.

UALR has been playing well. I not real concerned about the last 2 losses- We played well on the road and easily could have won both if not for freaky good free throw shooting by UTA and ULL. UTA missed a few late free throws after hitting their first 17 or so. ULL hit 22-23. Oh, the game before that GaSt went 21-21 (we did win that one). We improve our free throw defense we should be fine. Biggest concern is our lack of size, after losing our only skilled inside player. As long as we play up tempo and hit a decent percentage behind the arc we will competitive with anyone we play. If the opposing coach slows it down and gets into a half court game we will be in trouble.

USA is 27-16 all-time against UALR (63%), but is 6-1 against them in the SBC Tournament (86%).

That means nothing. This game will likely be close. USA won both games this year against UALR by a combined 5 points. Go Jags!

I have little doubt it will be a close game. We have lost a bunch of close games this season. Maybe that will turn around in the tournament. It's always hard to decipher if a run of close losses are simply due to "bad luck", coaching, or lack of a clutch player or 2. Tend to believe it is often due to bad luck, but it does get in the player's heads after awhile and then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The game against UALR isn't the first time that Davonte Walker has iced a game at the line this year. It's not "freaky good" if he's done it before. It's more of a trend than an aberration. That was a frustratingly sloppy game by the Cajuns. It shouldn't have been as close as it was.

Paying attention to UTA basketball too closely will make you either cynical or crazy. Cross is the only coach in UTA's basketball history to hover above .500.

The 80/81 Snake team maybe the best Mav team in the program's history, getting an at-large NIT berth back when it meant something more than it does today (only 48 teams made it to the dance then).

If you mean Coach Shields playing down to the talent level he has without White, then I understand your confidence. Right now, its ugly basketball forcing the opponent to match his style of play.
