That statement of fact was not a knock on App, but merely the App poster that noted it's closer to Boone from Lafayette than it was to NMSU.
Which is why when he said the point was moot, I think the poster mistook it as a knock on them (or for some strange reason as an argument to NOT have them in).
I simply wanted clarification. I don't know which is easier to drive to from any airport. My guess is that few here have done just that to both locations. I haven't seen a whole lot of facts, and I'm still curious if it has been confirmed that NMSU would want to move all non-football sports to the SBC??
Yes they would. Their on record as wanting ALL sports in one conference .. .
I've heard that, but we know for sure that they would accept a SBC offer? I ask because it doesn't seem they have gone on record as wanting ALL sports in the SBC.
I'm fairly indifferent on adding NMSU. I don't know nearly enough about AD budgets to make an informed decision. It seems like an easy add. I would think more support would come if UAB was allowed to remain in CUSA and the Presidents made it clear that a 12th ALL sports member was not an option in the east. But, that's pure conjecture.
For NMSU it's all about football (ironic, I know...).
We are fine with the WAC for all other sports, but there are no realistic FBS choices for us, other than the Sun Belt. And the long-term outlook for a football-only membership to the Sun Belt is more than a little shaky. So, yes, NMSU has previously sought, and I think would still accept an all-sports invite.
While it is nice to have all the sports in one conference, I think that NMSU is OK in the WAC. The WAC while a little spread out, does provide a larger exposure than the Sunbelt. NMSU gets to play in Chicago, KC, Seattle, Phoenix and the SLC area. It also, gives the students shorter trips than going to quite a few SB cities as UMKC has acknowledge in their experience in the WAC vs Summit.
Besides, if the MW loses 1 team to a P5 or by attrition (Hawaii), NMSU will be in the MW.
Being football only will be a mutual benefit to the Sunbelt and NMSU. If the presidents are set against not having a CCG, then Idaho is out and the Sunbelt with 10 fb members will be fine.

IF Hawaii leaves, it's not a forgone conclusion that NMSU ends up in the MWC. UTEP's AD in an interview with the El Paso ABC affiliate has stated that UTEP would be interested in a MWC invite. Upon hearing that, NMSU's AD says that he'll soon speak with UTEP about a package of NMSU/UTEP . . . . The potential problem for NMSU is that if the MWC only needs to replace one, NMSU may again be left in the cold.

I don't see UTEP really wanting to join the MW and leaving the Texas core of CUSA West. It is why they when the had the chance to they didn't and because of that, SJSU or USU was the team the rounded out the MW to 12 fb teams.
New Mex fought for NMSU and a few other schools did also....that is something not to be over looked.
Until UTEP alumni are not in Texas, they'll be in the CUSA.

If Hawaii were to drop football (highly doubtful), UTEP would be in line for to be the 12th football school. An even better fit would be UTEP moving their olympic sports to the MWC to get that conference to 12. If UAB was dropped, UTEP leaving for olympic sports would get CUSA to 12 for olympic sports. Plus, no more travel to El Paso.
NMSU would be left out in the cold. I think the WAC will be a better conference in 3-5 years if NMSU stays. It might be nice if NMSU scheduled four OOC games in basketball against SBC schools each season, maybe in exchange for an extended football membership.

I'm not say the UTEP would be a candidate or a preferred one, it just that time and time again when UTEP gets its chance to move, they don't. They may keep talking about wanting to be in the MW but the actions say they like CUSA.
