One theory I heard was that by the late 1990s, there were a lot of students who didn't know that "pub" is a common noun, and therefore thought of "Pub" as a proper noun unique to this particular establishment. I devoutly hope that's not the case.

RE: EZF Construction Thread
Had started another thread for spring practice agenda, but thought it more appropriate to pose this small question here: Will spring and fall practices be affected any by the EZF construction? (ie having to walk further, etc..)

Pub isn't a proper noun, it's more of a philosophy/way of life (or at least, that's how I viewed it in undergrad).

The athletic department should do that.

I imagine they'll tear down the building on top of the endzone and pull up all the concrete first. Demolition shouldn't take very long.

Gosh, that just can't be. Can it? Presumably the kids getting into Rice have high Verbal SATs, such that they've been exposed to a large number of words in their young lives (including the word "pub"). Surely there's a different reason at work here?

And the "Jess Neely Memorial Scoreboard," does anyone know if it will be re-purposed elsewhere, sold, or used again on top of the new EZF building? Has it started being disassembled yet? I seem to recall that Graham got some kind of a 'deal" on that along with the baseball scoreboard- it was being discontinued or something and there have been issues with it in the past? I'm trying to recall from past threads, here, so I may not have it exact.

In the renderings, there's a scoreboard on top of the new EZF. I don't know if they will use the Jess Neely or purchase a new one. I'm sure it could be used somewhere in the stadium. It would be a shame to put it to waste. Perhaps they'll tear down the R Room in the next phase and erect a scoreboard in it's place.

The guts of the board came from Daktronics, which is an excellent company.
We got it through one of Todd's friend-of-a-friend-of-a-brother-in-law deals though some intermediate vendor that I think folded shortly thereafter. IIRC, I think the story was that it had been either installed or set to be installed somewhere else, and whoever was going to get it decided on a different route, so it became surplus. I remember the first game against UH, I was spotting for JFred in those days and sat next to the scoreboard controls. The vendor had sent some tech rep who looked like he was about 19 to baby sit the first night. When time came to turn the board on, I thought he was going to have a heart attack. When it came on and worked, the look of relief on his face was priceless. Of course, those of us who were Rice regulars were so used to nothing working that we would have just accepted it as typical Rice, par for the course. But he didn't know that, and he was very obviously frightened nearly to death. Because the party with whom we contracted went under (I think that's right, in any event they haven't performed on any maintenance contract), and we didn't have a contract with Daktronics, we have had some maintenance issues.
Again IIRC, the baseball scoreboard came from a combination of Graham's deal on the football board (where we got the hardware), plus CDC's work in getting Tudor done (where we got the software).
There was a time when I was closer to the program and knew all the juicy gossip about this, but I've forgotten most of it.

They might be able to repurpose some of it, but there are parts that need to be replaced - half the time the lower panel has issues and seems to not work.
I forgot that the reseller went under. Ah ha! Maybe the owner left for his "dream job"

I don't know how y'all feel, but I've never been very impressed with the scoreboard. It may just be because I've seen nicer ones at other sporting events. It's hard to believe the Jess Neely score board is almost ten years old already.

RE: EZF Construction Thread
We will be looking to replace all three boards with a single bid. The HRS board as noted is basically Daktronics but as Owl69/../.. pointed out the other two are knock offs (and that is being kind). The result should be that all the boards will interact with each other with software to support all three. I would love to see Daktronics come in and do the job and then provide support to maintain them so we don't have to run around trying to patch them up with tape and bubble gum. Imagine a fully functioning baseball board while the women play basketball.

Will the old board on the south endzone remain? Or is it getting replaced as well?

I can think of only two boards in Rice Stadium, but could be wrong about that. Will a third be in the top corner of an upper deck or something? I think that would be a great addition, if so.

When the women's basketball game was at home there was no video at Reckling for the baseball game.
