Drexel Women's Basketball Thread
Lady Dragons held on to beat Towson today 50-45. They clinch the 2 seed in the CAA Tournament, and they are guaranteed a postseason berth this year. After a disappointing 2013-14 season following a WNIT Championship the year before, Drexel will be at least back in the WNIT in 2015. But I know that they have hopes of winning a CAA Championship even with JMU being so dominant.

How does the second place team clinch a WNIT spot? The only NIT/WNIT rule I know of is for the regular season champion.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball Thread
The WNIT has 64 teams, unlike the 32 in the NIT. So the WNIT issues an automatic bid to each conference. The automatic bid goes to the team in each conference highest in the standings, that's not in the NCAA Tournament. So now that I look at it, it's not 100% guaranteed, but pretty close.

If JMU wins the CAA, Drexel automatically goes to the WNIT, unless they get an NCAA at-large bid. If Drexel wins the CAA, JMU probably gets an NCAA at-large bid, so Hofstra would get the automatic bid to the WNIT. If a team other than Drexel or JMU wins the CAA, JMU would still likely be in the NCAA Tournament, so Drexel would likely get the WNIT automatic bid.

Point is that the CAA is guaranteed to have at least one team in the WNIT, and with Drexel finishing 2nd, it's very likely that they would get that automatic bid.

With JMU winning the CAA Championship, it' now official that Drexel gets the automatic bid to the WNIT. Hofstra and Elon will likely be joining Drexel in the field of 64. Brackets will be released late Monday night.

Our Lady Dragons will be playing Hampton at home. I am guessing an 8 seed as there aren't any seeds?

They don't seed in the WNIT, because matchups are pretty much geographic. I actually thought we were going to get a "road" game against Penn, Temple, or Nova. But it's a very winnable matchup for Drexel. Hampton is the best team in the 2nd worst conference in CBB. They finished first but lost in the conference Q-finals. Hampton came into the DAC and beat Drexel 50-47 last year, but this is a much better Drexel team than last year's team.

Also, some WNIT irony. Drexel faces the winner of West Virginia/Buffalo. WV and UB's men's team's are playing each other in the NCAA Tournament.

That was a tough loss. Drexel won 20 games despite being without their starting PG for the season, and I got word before the game that their backup PG injured their knee in practice.

Hampton plays a VCU like in your face style that's among the tops in the nation in steals. And they really struggled against that style with a 3rd string PG. Drexel turned the ball over 29 times against Hampton and Hampton lost despite shooting under 30%.

I don't know about incoming freshman, but Meghan Creighton will be back as starting PG, and they'll add Jessica Pellechio who was a redshirt transfer from VCU and also had knee surgery this year. I hear she'll be a very good play for Drexel.

Jam Thompson graduates and so does Jackie Schluth. However, Schluth applied for a medical hardship waiver for a 6th year of eligibility. She had to redshirt for 2 years due to injury. This waiver is similar to the waiver that Fouch was granted. I'd love to have Jackie back for another year. So if Jam is the only player that Drexel loses, they should be a very deep and experienced team next season.
