Sounds like a good idea.

UNLV has a lot smaller following than I would have thought. Much smaller than Nevada even. And they weren't excluded from the survey. If you look around Las Vegas, there's a few zip codes that have UNLV 3rd.

UConn looks stronger than Rutgers or BC.

If any P5 conference wanted to really advance into the Northeast, UConn may be a solid choice.

Just sayin'.....

And then we remember where all the population is in Nevada.

UNLV doesn't show strength in the small zip codes in and around Las Vegas city. UNLV on that map looks like Akron or Toledo--a few zip codes have them showing up, nowhere more than 10%.

I noticed that in NYC, there are fans of quite a few schools, Penn State, Michigan, ND, even Oregon, but in almost every zip code, Syracuse shows up in NYC and Long Island. We dont have to debate anymore who ACTUALLY has a following in NYC, because its obvious. Syracuse shows stronger than a homer like me, thought it would. SU's fans also bleed into other States like Penn, Vermont, Mass and a sliver of Connecticut.

I grew up in the NYC metro area. So many people apply to Syracuse from there. For some, Syracuse is their dream school. For others, it's their safety school. But almost everyone considers Syracuse sometime in the process.

RE: NYT College Football Fan Map
Any study that utilizes only one metric is flawed. Utilizing Face Book or any other fan site does little to show support other then to show the support of the fans whom visit that site.

This map like all the maps I've seen posted recently is useless nonsense. If you want a true indicator of the fan base, obtain information from fans attending games as well as the ratings in the areas where the games are shown. I believe even that would be insufficient but, it would still be a better indicator then this. 07-coffee3

LOL. Anyone around here can tell you NC State football is FAR more popular than UNC football, and ECU is not far behind. To show NC in all Carolina Blue is to lose all credibility.

The map could use some tweaking. Georgia Tech should have at least a dot near Atlanta and Auburn, as much as I can't stand them, should have a small sliver going from Auburn up to Atlanta. Duke and Wake Forest each get a dot around Durham and Winston Salem

RE: NYT College Football Fan Map
it would be more interesting if you were able to type in a zip code and get an actual list of which schools are considered favored, rather than a map of muted colors. (in some cases)

IF you zoom in far enough, and scroll over the zip code, you get the top 3 teams with their %.

And yes, facebook is the best source available for this sort of thing. There's some self-selection (not everybody "likes"), but it's not prone to ballot-stuffing campaigns (unless they start updating this map on a schedule, which I doubt). It's obviously not perfect, and some schools aren't included (Cincinatti just isn't there, which is a mistake; USF not being there may be a mistake or maybe they're #4 in their backyard) but it's hard to imagine a better data set for determining the geographic strength of different fanbases.

Money: UConn > RU
Fans: UConn > RU
Academics: UConn = RU
Football: UConn = RU
Basketball: UConn > RU
Other Sports: UConn > RU
Making PSU happy: UConn < RU
Athletic Recruiting: UConn < RU
Academic Recruiting: UConn < RU

Recruiting and keeping PSU go a long way.

I heard that this was just football. If that's true, it would be neat to see basketball and a hybrid of football and basketball combined.

If I remember correctly we figured out that this map didn't even include Cincinnati as a data point.
