Question Harrington takes leave - UPDATE
Bobcat Baseball Coach Ty Harrington is taking a leave of absence. The term is for an unspecified period. Coach Hattington is battling cancer. Assistant Coach Jeremy Fikac will take over in his absence.

Bobcat Nation's thoughts and prayers are with Coach Harrington and his family. We wish him a speedy recovery. . .

That's terrible to hear. My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and Texas State.

RE: Harrington takes leave
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Head Baseball Coach Ty Harrington will take a temporary leave of absence from the team due to health reasons and his ongoing bout with rectal cancer. He plans to return when healthy, and there is no definite timetable at this point. Harrington was diagnosed in August 2014.

"My return will be determined by how I feel. As soon as I feel strong enough to lead the team in the high manner it takes, then I will return," said Harrington. "I will still be associated with the team, but I'm confident that my assistant coaches, who have done most of the work with these guys in my absence, will do a good job and continue to work with our student-athletes at a high level.

"I originally thought I would be able to manage treatments and coaching at a high level, but the effects have been tough. I need to pay attention to my health and getting better," said Harrington.

Assistant Coach Jeremy Fikac will take over in the interim, assisted by Assistant Coach Mike Silva and Volunteer Assistant Coach Jeremy Knox.

"We knew this would be a challenging season for Coach Harrington and his family. Our number one concern right now is Coach Harrington and making sure he takes care of his health during his ongoing treatment. In talking to Coach, we believe it is best he takes some time off," said Texas State Director of Athletics Larry Teis. "There is no doubt in my mind Coach Fikac and Silva are capable of leading this program and our student-athletes. They embody the values we have in our baseball program and understand what to do to be successful."

Wow, that is sad. Maybe the conference can do something to raise funds for cancer research in his honor at the conference tournament.

While your heart is in absolutely the right place and that is a noble cause, as a cancer survivor myself, that is probably the opposite of what Coach Ty wants right now. After he has finished all of his treatments and goes into remission, which I'm sure will happen very quickly, would be more appropriate. That's just this guy's opinion of course.

I also wish Coach Harrington the very best and a full and speedy recovery. Take your time Coach, the Bobcats will be patiently waiting for your return.

RE: Harrington takes leave - UPDATE
Tuesday - 4/21, Harrington had his last chemo treatment. He went to the TXST/UT game (that night), but was not in uniform; although he sat in the dugout. The UT team made a point of recognizing him and the crowd gave him a standing O. (as most know he played at UT). Not ready to come back yet but, hopefully, he is on the road to full recovery.

RE: Harrington takes leave - UPDATE
Coach Harrington's situation is the sort of thing that reminds us that there's a whole lot bigger picture to consider than just competition on the fields and courts. As much as I hope that my Eagles win every contest against Texas State, I hope even more that Coach Harrington wins his battle. All the best to him!
