Just listened to Benson interview on Ark. St. site from a couple days ago
What I got from it was:

1. The Sun Belt is definitely changing the bball scheduling format for next year. From what Benson said it is fairly clear he does not support the 20 game conference schedule. He also wants limits on non D1 games. He makes it sound like the schools don't want these 2 things.

2. If it were up to him we would be at 12 teams right now with an eastern team added (I assume his choice would be Liberty)

3. He generally sounds like he is asleep or disinterested.

We have a working theory that he takes vallium or something before radio interviews. Either that, or he really hates talking to our radio guys, which I could see.

I have heard him do several interviews since GS joined the league and more and more the sense I get is "We need to do . . . . but the schools voted to do the opposite."

That being said I see absolutely no reason to not cap the non-D1 games a team can play at 2 at the most and I would be happy capping it at 1. I say this knowing that we (GS) along with ULM are the worst offenders of this. I think we played 3 this year and I believe ULM played 4 non-D1 teams.

I guess the only problem I have with less than 20 games is the Sun Belt's policy of not allowing all teams to go to the tourney. I basically believe if you are going to exclude teams from the tourney then all teams should play home/home with everyone. It can't be argued that schedule favors a team if you do that.

If we go to less than complete home/home schedule I would support allowing all teams to make the conference tourney.

I'm a big fan of the MAC's format. 12 teams, Seeds 5-12 play each other at home sites in round 1. A couple days later they move to the champipnship sites for the rest of the tourney. 1st round winners play, with the winners playing 3 and 4, with the 1 and 2 seeds entering in the Semis. A team that finished 12th would get in, but would have to win 5 games in 7 days to advance.

In an 11 team SBC, the 5th place team would get a 1st round bye and play with the first round winners on Day 1 at the tourney site.

Even with an unbalanced schedule the teams excluded are going to have won less than 40% of their league games. So if you knock out a 5-11 team because they went home and home with the two toughest and not with two weakest, at very worst you are knocking out a potential 7-9 team. I don't really care if a potential 0.4375 winning percentage is knocked out because they went 0.3125.

The team with a beef is the one who goes in seeded 5,6,7, or 8 and has to win four when they might have needed to win three or two with a better schedule.

When we played divisions the fans here mostly favored a 6 team tournament

Changing subjects, instead of Liberty there is a school in the Big South that should be considered if they are interested in moving up Coastal Carolina! The reasons they should be considered. Their Football Program has become one of the best in the FCS with an outstanding coach who just happens to be one of the richest men in the United States! Joe Moglia is also the current Chairman and former CEO of TD Ameritrade. In his seven years as CEO there the company's client assets grew from $24 billion to over $300 billion! He has put millions into Coastal Carolina's Football Program. It is a growing school with close to 10,000 student in a great location near Myrtle Beach! It has an outstanding Baseball Program and a good Basketball Program with Cliff Ellis as the head coach.

I drove by Coastal the other day.
The new baseball stadiums is really nice softball stadium less so but good for softball.
What I found interesting is the athletic facilities area is now the TD center. So they must have donated a chunk money.
He is still on the board of TD bank/Ameritrade whatever you call it. The football stadium was built to be easily expanded to twenty thousand. Perfect town for a bowl game except for the flag issue.

Talked to new AD at UALR yesterday, and he indicated that he thought the women would play on Wednesdays. I know he just came on board this week (Tuesday) and didn't attend the recent Sun Belt meetings. So he might have it wrong- I imagine he has had a lot on his plate the past few days. He did say men and women would continue to play on Saturdays. Anyway, are you pretty sure about the Monday games?

I've heard multiple AD's and Jay Walker use the Saturday-Monday format. Though Benson did not.

Just type in "Karl Benson Interview" in the search box and it should be one of the first 4-5 items to come up.
