There are 36 at-large bids (including at-large bids to the First Four).

Thanks for the correction my math was off

32 auto bids and 36 at larges

Im kinda glad we are not ranked going into Charleston. If/When we get ranked I fear it will be a distraction. Keep that chip on your shoulder fellas

I disagree. Publicity is good, and we're no less likely to lose on the road to CoC now than we would be if we were ranked.

Fair enough.

I just see it as extra motivation, which never hurts going into arguably our toughest CAA game of the year. Once ranked I see it becoming a potential distraction. Don't need any distractions playing in Charleston

The publicity IS good. Like the Hofstra coach said post-game Saturday we need to get people (the talking heads) talking about UNCW. If not we run the risk of getting the shaft like Hofstra did last year should we stumble in Charleston.

Saying this is a huge game is an understatement.
You're tied for 27th in the Coaches Poll and 31st in the AP Poll. Your 6 AP Poll points were by being ranked 24th by Elton Alexander and Steve Wiseman and 25th by John Feinstein and Seth Davis. Steve Wiseman writes about Duke for The Herald-Sun in Durham. I don't know if people in Wilmington care about The Herald-Sun.

Hofstra got the shaft in terms of a worse NIT seed than they deserved, but Hofstra's didn't deserve an at-large bid last season. They deserved an at-large bid in 2005-2006.

If UNC Wilmington gets ranked in the AP Poll, it will end the CAA's wait of over 30 years since their last ranked team. Navy was ranked on January 20, 1987. The AP does not do a postseason poll, so George Mason and Virginia Commonwealth reaching the Final Four didn't help the CAA get a ranked team.

RE: NCAA Men's BBall Poll (AP)
Would love to see 2 CAA squads in, but when you start to look at the bracketology, it is so weighted in favor of the P5 conferences. A very select few(like Gonzaga, the Shockers, and the AAC and A10) get some consistent yearly support for an at large bid. I'd rather see the top 4-5 mid majors get a bid and see the 8th team from the ACC or Big Ten left out, but I am in the minority. Clearly UNCW and maybe NU have the only even possible chance for at large this year. You need to have a great overall record, a loss in the conference tourney, several positive non-conference wins(probably on the road), and an RPI under 35 to likely get in. I do think being ranked does help as well. Hopefully, none of the top 25 would have an RPI below 40, but it probably has happened at some point in the past. I definitely could see the Seahawks winning a game or two in the tournament this year if they get there.

Unfortunately it's all driven by money. CBS and the NCAA would prefer a crappy Michigan or Ohio State or Texas as a 10 seed because they will get much better ratings. As great a story it is when a George Mason or a VCU makes the final four, very few people watch the game because they're in it. If a couple of these schools happen to make it at the expense of a Duke or a Kentucky, CBS will start urging the NCAA to make it harder for mid-majors to get in. Remember when St. Joe's got a number one seed 10 years or so ago? Billy Packer and Jim Nantz both voiced objections during the selection show. They interviewed St. Joe's coach live and he let them have it for saying his team didn't deserve a #1 seed. I personally was hoping they'd win the whole thing. I think they lost in the elite 8.

Both Mason and VCU were ranked in the final polls in their final four years. But I think you are correct....neither was ranked during the regular season.

As I said, the AP does not do a postseason poll. http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketb...asontype/3 is for 2005-2006 and shows that George Mason was Number 8 in the postseason Coaches Poll after going to the Final Four. The CAA drought in the Coaches Poll ended before then when George Mason was ranked Number 25 for one week in the regular season. Neither them nor VCU was ranked in any AP Poll in the season they went to the Final Four.

#20 Cincinnati is about to beat Temple
#19 Florida just lost to #24 South Carolina

Tomorrow night
#25 Maryland goes to Iowa and #23 St Mary's hosts Pacific.

The Xavier game already went our way so if we could get an upset or 2 tomorrow we will be in a good position should we win out this week

#21 Florida just lost their second straight game. If we win today could this propel us into the top 25?

Their 2 losses coupled with Xavier's loss earlier in the week might just do it. Any other games we need to be watching?
