Owls vs. Shockers MBB
Owls down 14 at 15 min mark of 2H. 65-51

I know someone here can do the research to determine the worst 3-pt defense in history of D1.

Shockers shooting 68% so far and Owls shooting 28% from 3-pt line.

That is the difference in ballgame.

I don't have the time to look this up for the "history of D1" ... but ...

So far this year, Rice's opponents are making 36.9% of their 3-point attempts, which is 343rd out of 362. FIU is the worst: 40.7%

https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basket...-point-pct

(If it's any consolation, Vandy is 354th (37.7%) and Stephen F. Austin is the worst in Texas (347th/37.1) ... but maybe that will change after tonight's stats are added to the database?)

FWIW, Ken Pom said in 2012 that “3-point defense should not be defined by opponents’ 3P%"

Ken Pom Wrote:With few exceptions, the best measure of three-point defense is a team’s ability to keep the opponents from taking 3’s. ... Nobody with any knowledge of the game would talk about free throw defense using opponents’ FT% as if it was a real thing, yet we’ll hear plenty of references to three-point defense in that way from famous and respected people. Of course, both free-throw defense and three-point defense exist, but it’s much better measured in the amount of shots taken and not in the noisy world of the percentage of shots an opponent makes.

https://kenpom.com/blog/3point-defense-s...onents-3p/

So far this season, Rice is 262nd in Opponent 3-point attempts: 23.3/game.

Worst is Coastal Carolina (31.3)

87-66 final. Rice with its usual stellar 2nd half play, being outscored 45-27.

Such enthusiasm for the men's basketball program - this is the 3rd comment, and the game has been over for awhile.

Here’s a comment:

I’m a whole lot less bummed about missing the men’s tourney due to a travel conflict today than I was a week ago when I found out.

Look on the bright side. In a few days we get to rejoice in the exit of Pera and start speculation on his replacement. It’ll be the most excitement we’ve experienced in Rice Athletics since Bragga was canned. Sigh.

You must have missed the 2023 Bayou Bucket game.

In three games we get to see what Tommy McClelland thinks about the program.

This indeed been a terrible Spring for Rice athletics. I kinda feel like a Chicago Cub fan.

Probably more like 4 or 5 games - unlikely for him to make a move before the conference playoffs.

If he goes through this year with all major men's sports having sub-.500 records, and doesn't make a coaching change in any of them, then why is Rice paying him?

Good point, and this is one of several reasons why I feel so strongly that Pera's is gone. After letting Bloomgren come back for another season, a coach's head has to roll.

McClelland not firing Pera would be an unfathomable decision. Basically indefensible regardless of whether you go by the numbers or the eye test. Year 7 without a .500 record in conference play. A defense consistently in the 230-300 range, with no evidence that Pera can improve on that, meaning there's a clear ceiling on what we can achieve even if everything falls into place. If he's not gone by the third week of March, we're not a serious athletics program. Harsh, but whatever at this point.

Trilly Donovan, one of the more plugged in (but anonymous) CBB reporters, has Pera on his list of mid-major coaches on the hot seat (unsurprisingly). In February his blurb was "Pera got a big win over Memphis last night, but [he] needs to win a lot more to get another season in Houston."

I have a feeling the men’s woes are trickling over to the women too. Those two programs are very close, and personnel issues within the men could absolutely mess with the psyche of the women.

Agreed. I think it would be inconceivable at this point for Pera not to be dismissed after the season.
