But good start so far .
Thinking ahead, to get an at large bid to the NCAA a team generally needs to be at least in the top 40. And that's no guarantee. Sometimes you'll see one past 40, but it's pretty rare.
Teams with RPI's in the 50's and 60's get in here and there. It's all about quality wins and minimizing bad losses. For us to be in the at-large conversation, we would need to win the rest of our OOC games and probably only lose 1 or 2 conference games, and then lose in our conference final. Plus we'd have to hope like hell that Michigan, Michigan State, and Dayton all kick some ass in their conferences to make those wins/loss look better.
Highly, highly unlikely, but not completely out of the realm of possibility. Personally.

No, you're not a football school again. You lost that a season or so ago, UM.

i'm ashamed to say how much time i spent reading the UM message boards yesterday.

Sam,
I am looking at the rankings not for at-large considerations. But just to see where EMU stands among the rest of teams. Their current rankings are at the high end for mid-majors. Which is good start, and I am not saying they will stay there.
If we did talk at-large considerations, here are 68 teams in NCAA tournament. 15-20 seeds go to conference champions with rankings below that. So I think to get an at-large bid you probably need to be in 40s. Not saying there are not exceptions. EMU would not be in with these rankings.

Are these B1G (e.g., UofM and other schools) grads?

Definitely not. But assuming we win out in the OOC, as I mentioned in the hypothetical (again, highly unlikely), our RPI would go up, because it would include the MSU and Missouri State road wins.
Nc State, Xavier, and Nebraska all got in last year with RPIs in the 50s. Iowa did too with an RPI of 60. The number doesn't mean as much as quality wins and minimal bad losses does.

the quotes are from mgoblog. i assume it's a mixed bag of UM grads and UM slappies that went to EMU ( (see the first quote for an example) and other schools.
and please note that i'm not trying to frame Todd here, i just suck at formatting quotes.

BTW, in case anyone needs a quick verbal refresh. :)
oh hell yeah! this is great. the only bummer about being at the game was that i didn't get to hear Chad call the game.
Yeah, Chad is very easy on the ears. He does a very nice job on PxP and his voice is very good for audio (believe me, there are some on ESPN whose voices are $%@^^$%^). Sean is really good on color.
(we've had some excellent folks over the years going back to my favorite, John Fountain).
The problem I had Tuesday night is that WEMU was about 15 seconds ahead of ESPNU.
BTW, FWIW, I have met Cory Alexander (color) before. Had a chance to talk with him this past summer. Mentioned my EMU roots. Little did I know that he would be doing one of our games. I'll see him next summer. He is involved in AAU ball in the D.C. area.
I kind of thought, out of 350 D-I teams does he know anything about us?
HELL YES!!!

I thought Cory did an excellent job on the U of M game, first time I've seen and heard him.

Stopping by to say huge props for beating Michigan. Victory of the year for the MAC, in my opinion. Looks like EMU has a possible tourney team this year. Happy for you guys.

It is a good time to be a fan of the MI-based MAC teams.
WMU and CMU in football.
WMU in hoops last season (and EMU too).
EMU, as you indicate, is a possible tourney team.
I'm enjoying MAC sports a lot these days...

this win went a long in getting us a good tournament bid that is id uofm can turn it around if they keep losing then this win loses a lot of it's luster.

LJM, good point that I am not being very precise- you are a good EMU man.
I was assuming 15-20 conference champrions would be ranked low and take away bids from higher ranked at large teams. (other conference champs are highly ranked and therefore not taking spots away from anyone since they would be at-large as well). Now that you point out the are 32 conferences, than I would say the number15-20 is higher.
But my point is you need to shoot for being in the 40s to get at large bid. ie, 68-20=48. The selection committee goes by this almost to a T. Check it out in March, it is uncanny how it effects bids and seeding.
As Sam points out there are few exceptions towards the lower ranked at large teams every year. A team in the low 40s might be slumping towards the end of the year, and a team in the 50s is on a hot streak. So selection committee will bid the 50s team.
(my kid wants to put some of the characters in. so the following has nothing to do with the post.)

One thing about that quote as Toddjnsn is trying to make clear:
I believe he is quoting someone who said something.
Not sure we know who the person was who originally posted it on a forum.
I don't believe the person is a poster on our or the MAC forum. I got the impression it was from a UofM forum.
I don't go to UofM forums for sports enlightenment.
