WARNING to the students who read this board
This has been said many times but I feel it deserves its own thread. I know some student leaders are encouraging you to "act a blazin fool" during tonight's game. I was in the student section in 2007 when we lost to #1 Memphis in the last seconds as students were ready to storm the court. Many students let their emotions get the best of them that night, and we came out looking like fools. NOT ALL PUBLICITY IS GOOD PUBLICITY. There will be lots of cameras and reporters at tonight's game and protests. They will be looking for a story.

PLEASE KEEP IT CLASSY.

KNOW THAT YOU'RE GOING TO GET KICKED OUT IF YOU'RE SCREAMING EXPLETIVES, MAKING THREATS, ETC...

BE RESPECTFUL TO THE BASKETBALL TEAM AND DON'T CHANT WHILE THEY'RE PLAYING. THEY DON'T DESERVE TO BE PUNISHED.

HOLD YOUR PEERS ACCOUNTABLE IF THEY GET OUT OF LINE.

That being said, keep up the fight, and we appreciate all of you. Thank you for all you've done so far! Go Blazers!

I dont think there will be any punishment for the Basketball... The biggest crowd this season will watch them play. They get to play next season. Today is not really about them. Its about UAB Football, Rifle & Bowling.

If they can't understand what will take place tonight, and sacrifice one game of distraction, then they are selfish and part of the problem.

I havent seen one basketball player or coach marching, demonstrating, or fighting through twitter. So tonight, many could care less what they think.

Even still, don't act an ass. Any and all the hard work and respect that msy hsve been built will be lost. Urge your fellow students to be level headed. You don't know what was or wasn't said to the Bball players about saying anything. From my understanding most of these kids are freshmen or just young and don't know what will happen if they speak out.
Protest, chant, but be civil. Acting an ass and being an updyke is exactly what some want you to do. And to be honest it seems that some agitators are trying to gey the pot stirred in the wrong way in purpose.

I havent seen anyone suggest breaking any rules or laws, which they shouldnt, but to suggest that this basketball game will be the usual basketball atmosphere after tipoff is absurd.

Nobody is suggesting that. Everyone is on the edge right now, and this event could easily turn ugly if we have people who want to act like idiots and make this about them. I fully support the protest tonight and will be there with all of you, but it needs to be handled with class. Don't stoop to Watts's level.

I have full confidence in your young men and women. If they didn't kill watts "the day the football died" they will be fine tonight. I want everyone to hang around and cheer the basketball team to victory.

After reading the facebook post, I'm concerned. Mob aggression is easy to fall into.

RE: WARNING to the students who read this board
This was just posted in the "Save UAB Football" facebook group by one of the students who's been leading some of the protests. He's referencing the students I'm afraid of.

"Guys, I have a LOT to do with finals and stuff right now. So if y'all could stop doing stupid stuff that gets me phone calls, that'd be great. Stop sending emails with profanity in them to faculty, staff, or anyone else. Have a little bit of class. It's fine to scream and carry on in here or on your statuses, but when you are representing this movement, you better act professional. Don't take away from what we are doing because you can't control your emotions."

RE: WARNING to the students who read this board
I spent a good bit of today with former colleagues, and right now the focus is on Ray Watts' disgraceful behavior.

We cannot afford, under any circumstances, to have that focus shifted to the students' disgraceful behavior. Keep the spotlight on Watts. Do not give him a means to shift the conversation.

And above all, DO NOT give him the excuse to pose as champion of law and order by deploying police or security against law-breaking students. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS. And I am not guessing on this: I have been warned by friends within the administration who begged that the message be passed on. DO NOT PROVOKE THE POLICE OR SECURITY. They are waiting for it.

We could lose everything we've fought for tonight in a single act of stupidity. Do not let this happen.

+1. Some campus cops are waiting for it even when tensions aren't running high. I seem to recall my wife once getting threatened by an officer to be taken to jail at a basketball game. He felt the need to intervene when she was appropriately voicing her displeasure to a couple Bartow contract employees on power trips who were being extremely rude to her and wouldn't let our guests, who had purchased student guest tickets, sit with us in the student section. No foul language was used by my wife, and she wasn't causing a huge seen or being disrespectful. Oh, and there were less than 15 students at that game because it was the holiday break. We complained to the UAB police dept, and that officer never worked a game again. It took everything in me not to punch that guy in the face. Now, that was over NOTHING and the guy had no reason to be on edge.

They'll be looking for trouble tonight I hope they don't find any legitimate reasons to take action.

The senate meeting tomorrow could hinge on how people act tonight. If it gets ugly, they will back Watts.

And I don't think anything was crazy, I think the police were just trying to help him get out of there.

RE: WARNING to the students who read this board
Basketball is awaiting the decision on conference affiliation that may have to be made this coming summer if C-USA stands by the reported bylaw that requires all members play D1 football. Yes, i'm sure Dr Watts knows this bylaw. He's probably hoping to avoid as many nasty decisions a possible until the "heat" over FB has passed.

Ending the FB program may not be an end but only a pause in process as we "wait for the other shoes to drop". If UAB is forced to find a league that is below D1, we may find we have to replace several coaches in other sports and many players who only want to play D1 ball.
