RE: Band impact
This reminds me of a 30 for 30 short I watched a few months ago called "The Band that Wouldn't Die" directed by Barry Levinson. It isn't college, but it is about the Baltimore Colts sneaking out in the middle of the night and moving to Indianapolis in 1984. It tells the story through the eyes of the Colts marching band it left behind. It was very moving. It might be online or on netflix, but I suggest everyone watch it. We can identify with it now.

As an old high school band drummer, I can tell you half time shows are fun when compared to marching contest. The competition is intense. The Marching Blazers have a "secret life" that just learned of recently. The do a lot of contests and exhibition shows. That requires many hours of work each week. I believe they will be around for a few years anyway.

RE: Band impact
There could be other ways to economize with a marching band. Less expensive outfits and fewer new instruments as needed are some I have seen used. Limiting the band's size (perhaps under the guise of higher requirements for joining) has been used.

Right now I am suspicious of any "economizing" that the BOT wants for UAB in that I suspect them of trying to keep UAB's enrollment numbers suppressed in hopes of shifting students to the "main campus"..
