UAB subsidy $18,000,000 Alabama subsidy: $5,791, 200
The downfall of one of our G5 peers probably does constitute as to how the future will be shaped. However, I find it odd that Alabama is also subsidized (by $5,791,200.) This got me thinking about how this was used as an excuse to literally destroy a football program. Below is a list of all the G5 athletic budgets that play FBS starting with UNLV, which actually has a bigger budget than some P5's. It's amazing what some of us are investing (mostly in a good way.) Yup, I know, everyone has referred to the USA list from last year, but I feel it is especially pertinent given that an actual program has been taken off the map. Apologies in advance, the formatting is not the best.[/code]

UNLV's athletic budget isn't actually that high. They just include the outside revenues that the Thomas & Mack Center makes so the budget number there is artificially high.

I will say about five years ago our total athletic budget was about 9 million. We've doubled our budget in those five years, and they are shooting for a 25 million budget within the next three years. This after 30 years of an administration doing everything possible to make sure athletics stayed as far in the background as possible.

UAB's athletic subsidy is projected to stay the exact same, with or without football. Football was a drop in the bucket on the subsidy and was nearly neutral. They just wanted to end our football program. There is really nothing else to it.

A lot of the talking heads on ESPN and what not are reporting it like our football program was losing our athletic department 17 million a year or some garbage. Not even close to the facts.

Not even close to the facts.

those numbers show that if you are a school that people support, you are able to raise enough revenue to not need to be subsidized by the university. the big difference between p5 and g5 is obvious. the p5 bring in more money. even tho they manage to spend every penny, they have more to start with and the main factor as I see it is that they have more butts in the seats and a stronger brand. few g5 schools have much of a brand and practically none are the flagship of their state. that stuff is slow or even impossible to change.

I'm not in favor of UAB football getting shut down. Even if it was a "foregone conclusion." However, it's projected in the next few years that the state of Alabama is going to be hit with about a

$700 MILLION budget shortfall.

What get's cut first?

Education.

Education has been getting cut in Georgia for years. Austerity cuts. Cost local school districts big bucks ....

But let's not kid ourselves here. College football isn't education. It's a game. It teaches kids life lessons, yes, but it isn't math and science and philosophy.

Though I do think it's teaching kids that if you work hard and do right while in school, you'll help make someone else a lot of money. And that's a life lesson right there.

Let's be honest, a lot of these kids would never sniff a college campus if it wasn't for football. That is enough benefit in my opinion. Think of how many kids make the grades in high school just to have a shot to play college ball....even if they don't get to play ball, the chance itself puts them in position to graduate high school and in a position to at least attend college.

I figure there are a lot of people who know about colleges because of one of two things: Either they've consistently had to consider them in their March Madness bracket, or they see their football games (or at least scores) regularly on fall Saturdays. I can only imagine this phenomenon is heightened a bit in Alabama. I think dropping football was a mistake.

BTW, I think that, a long time ago, a GS fan on this board or PantherTalk said something along the lines of how GSU shouldn't become UAB. It was a bit of WTF comment at the time, but in hindsight, really good advice.

Idaho is in a similar situation. Dead last in population with a degree and education spending and damn proud of it. We're in a race with Mississippi to have the worst ed system in the country which seems like the right path to be on. Our former head of education was never a teacher, couldn't graduate from freaking BSU and his degree was from an online school in "units of measurement". The new replacement was caught lying about her academic credentials, caught plagiarizing material from her opponent's website, and lied about her marraige history but she still got elected because she was with the right (pretty much only) party and that's all that matters in ID politics. It's the only reason why I would never live in Idaho, but I digress.

Anyways it was my understanding that UAB's issue wasn't so much the subsidy as it was the $18 million plus the massive rennovations that the football stadium needed, is that accurate?

Betcha not one thing gets cut in Tuscaloosa :)

Its marketing. Its a cost center. You just write it off. No FBS school is in the athletics business to get rich. It's some said "I used to think USF was in Miami until they started football"

21 schools have not
started and or moved up in the last 20 years because of untold riches, Its because of the ancillary benefit of having your name out there in FBS. Ask UConn what the benefit of moving up and being in the Big East was/is. There is a reason that FedEx is pouring money into U of Memphis. Good for them, good for the school and good for the city. This is what people mean when they scream about the uAB situation "You're talking to me about dollars and cents?!?!?"

The dollars and cents never add up except for a very small few. By Ray Watts logic there would be one division of football with 45 schools...period. Now talk to me about the long term effects when grads start saying to themselves "I need to get out of Birmingham" based on the small town small minded politics.

Lengthy but very complete assessment.
