Why WKU (and others) left for C-USA
I Hope you all know me well enough to know I'm not trolling. But as a Topper fan this season's ending is much different now that we are in CUSA.

This time last year we were 8-4 and watching every scenario of games to find our path to a bowl game only to be left out. At 8-4! Three years ago at 7-5 we sat home.

Today, at 7-5 we are insured a bowl game. No list of scenarios and rooting for this team and that team hoping the math will go in our favor.

I hope the SBC gets more bowl contracts. I also hope the conference will write some rules to reward your top teams.

Congrats, we have four bowls next year, we appreciate you concern for the SBC but we're going to be fine.

I am glad you took down the farce yesterday.

Looking forward to getting you guys on the schedule someday.

Thought it was for basketball. The bowl thing is a valid point, for now. Wish you would've stayed.

RE: Why WKU (and others) left for C-USA
I hated that WKU stayed home last year at 8-4. It really came down to UL and stAte were both conference champions, there were only two bowls, and they both have better attendance and travel histories than WKU. The SBC is clearly behind on bowl tie ins because of Waters and Benson. This year 3 is better and 4 the following year will be great.

Moving forward, 4 bowl bids for 11 schools in SBC is pretty good.
Will USA get another? Will it be 5 or 6 bowl bids for 14 teams? I agree there needs to be some structure about who gets the bid but I don't think the SBC is in any position to make those demands of the bowl comittees.

I like the SBC bowl tie-ins better than the CUSA tie ins because they are all within our region. It may not be glamorous to go to Montgomery or Mobile but I can get there alot easier and cheaper than Boca Raton, Bahamas, or Hawaii.

The main advantage for the SBC defectors was a few years of the old TV contract and better basketball. Our basketball program at stAte is in the toilet. I am happy for WKU to get a better basketball conferene and have closer rivals with MTSU and Marshall and even UAB

Great win yesterday by the Toppahs! WKU's quick success along with MTSU and UNT last year prove football is pretty much even between the two conferences. We also picked up some great adds with App and Ga So.

WKU got jobbed last year. I pull for them in everything that they do. I have made some really solid WKU friends over the years and I wish them well. UL will bolt in a heartbeat if asked.

Not because we dislike the Belt, but because perception is reality. Unfortunately, even though a few Belt teams have athletic programs that are much better than most in CUSA, we are still looked down upon.

No one blames you for leaving. In the SBC, we all talk about solidarity and hangin' tough ang Fightin' the good fight. And really, what else can we do? It ain't like we got anywhere else to go. Perception (and perception IS reality) says we are still the worst FBS conference among the bunch. All of us know that an invitation to ANY other conference brings with it, better media, better money, more bowl tie-ins, ect . . . . And as long as that is a Reality, ALL/ANY of us will continue to bolt given the opportunity .... . . ..... 04-cheers

That is probably true. For TX. State, it would be an easy choice because of all the TX schools in CUSA. For stAte, the only real concern is being left behind.

We have 4 bowls for 11 teams next year and CUSA has 5 for 14. Not a big difference. WKU is guaranteed a spot this year because most of CUSA is ineligible.

WK did more for the Belt yesterday than they ever did as a member. I'm grateful.

We also have two ineligible this year. Next year will be more painful.

RE: Why WKU (and others) left for C-USA
The best part about Marshall losing to WKU is that the "Mighty Thundering Turds" lost to basically a lowly SBC team. The paint hadn't even dried on their CUSA logos.......

How 'bout 'dem apples?

I used to respect Marshall a great deal, then realignment happened and they just couldn't come to grips with the fact App State or Ga Southern could have a place at their table. Their fans constantly felt the need to remind us where their place in the universe was and how much lower on the totem pole we were.

The best quotes from their crazed fans are that in no way shape or form could App State or Ga Southern move up and have quick success, we cited their program's move up as an example that it could be done. They took that as an insult, in now way could we walk the same foot steps as the Thundering Turds....never.

sure....if you ignore all the basketball credits from western wins in the ncaa tourney. our last sweet 16 alone will have brought in more MONEY....actual money....than you'll bring to the sunbelt in the next 5 years of football.

edit: i forgot you'll be in one of the big bowls next year. i take it back.

it was for several reasons and basketball was a big one. not that cusa is a multibid league but they do have the potential to be. football is still the big boy as in all conferences but there are many schools that do value hoops.

odu, charlotte, and uab have hoops history with us that goes back to when we first entered the sunbelt and it was a hoops league only.

as someone pointed out the bowl scenario next year will be about equal. we'll always be on the outside looking in for bowls anyway. bowls aren't about 'deserving' or records. they're about who can make money for the bowl. western doesn't have historical data to point to and if they did it'd probably be sad.

i hope we do get one this year. i'm not as sure as the op that we're in. we still need some losses today imo.

How many of these were from at-large bids and not just the autobid anyone would have gotten? Just curious.

4 bowls for 11 teams is not bad. If we can get 1 more and go to 5 of 11 I think that would be ideal. I hope the 5th bowl will be one on the western side of the conference, preferably in Louisiana, Arkansas or Texas.

they weren't at-large. but they were actual wins in the tourney. you're gonna get the same amount every year for your appearance. but we won 2 games one year making it to the sweet 16 and one game the next losing to gonzaga at the buzzer to keep from going to another sweet 16. those payouts are better. and last for awhile. i'm not sure if the payout from winning the pig game was more than just losing in the first round or not. but it was a win.

not sure who has actually won a game in the ncaa tourney other than us for awhile. those are real dollars made. and paid out.

you can't convince me that any of the schools make money from the big lots bowls. yeah....it's a reward.....we all love them. but actual money made. i don't believe it.

i just reacted to a very common and flippant attitude.

and beating uk twice while we were in belt in football never hurt the sunbelt. western had some decent out of conference wins the last few year even though we stumbled some in conference play.

I think the Heart of Dallas Bowl should be our target. CUSA is locked in to send a team but the Big 10 & Big 12 are alternates so many times they may not be able to fill the obligation. With Zaxby's being a title sponsor we maybe could have an in to negotiate a Sun Belt primary tie in there.

You are right about the bowls. About the best you can do is break even. I think that's what we did the first two years...not sure about last year.
