NCCollegeSports.com has ranked all 18 division one basketball teams in North Carolina. Their #18? UNCW.

http://www.nccollegesports.com/featured-...wilmington

It's a particularly uninformed and illogical write-up. For instance, this:

Looking at their schedule, they have quite a few winnable games before they get into conference play, including in-state matchups with UNC-Greensboro, Davidson, ECU, and Campbell. They also have an opportunity to pull off an upset when they travel to Louisville.

So after ranking us dead last, they site as our "winnable" games those against teams they just ranked us behind, and as a possible upset the single least likely win on our schedule.

Still, the post gives us an idea of how the program is viewed by many at this point. So for that reason alone it's worth taking a look.

Hi, I'm not sure if you will see this but I'm the founder of NCCollegeSports.com and the person who wrote this preview. Your criticism caught my eye and I just wanted to have a quick discussion.

The games I listed as "winnable" against other NC teams are there for 2 reasons.

1. We like to highlight in-state matchups because it's what our site is all about- College teams in North Carolina
2. Those games are winnable. I wouldn't favor UNCW in any of them, however that's not what winnable means. Winnable means they have a chance, and in those games, they do.

As far as the Louisville comment, that game was noted because it's the toughest game on their schedule. You pointed out that it's listed as a possible upset, and that's because it is. UNCW has nearly zero chance of winning that one, however it is their biggest opportunity to beat a great team this year and is the best team they'll face, therefore I felt it could be highlighted.

Lastly, I will admit this write-up wasn't particularly thorough and that is unfortunate. However, we are a new site with only 3 staff members and none of us have any ties to UNCW. They're not a particularly easy team to keep track of when we're based in Charlotte and we did the best we could to provide a brief synopsis of what to expect this upcoming season. I apologize if it didn't live up to your expectations.

In closing, I will say that we appreciate any and all feedback as we are trying to improve every day. I'm happy that you decided to share the preview and help make us better with constructive criticism. This is meant in no way to be negative, it's just a response to try to explain ourselves.

Best wishes in your new endeavor. Seriously. I think the idea of a niche site that focuses on NC-wide sports is a great idea.

I suspect that in order to be successful and be a go-to site, you will need to demonstrate that what sets you apart from the writers of the typical preseason prognostication is that you actually do know more than they do about the teams you are writing about.

A decade ago, when UNCW was really hitting on all cylinders and was a legitimate Top 50 team/program for a stretch, it would frustrate me to no end just how ignorant sports writers who did not typically cover UNCW or the CAA were. I mean, they had NO IDEA what they were talking about when the opined on the team or the conference - if the commented at all. For the most part, they were blissfully unaware that there was a team that was that good that even existed in southeastern NC because they were too busy wondering what Coach K was going to order up for Duke's pregame meal.

So, the fact that you are attempting to cover all the D-I teams in NC is a real distinction for you. My hunch is that if you get more studied-up before writing about teams, you can build a following.

Best of luck.

Being based in Charlotte is not an excuse for a write up that lacks substance. I still follow closely from Raleigh, and i know a ton of UNCW grads live in the Charlotte area and follow as well. It's the age of information, all you need to find out about UNCW can be found in about 30 minutes on the net.
