I think that is how stAte got Mizzou and Miami to agree to home & homes.

Pretty much. Moreso with Missouri. There were only 10 or so FBS teams who had open dates left at that point, and we were two of them. We were far more willing to take on a 2nd FCS game than they were, so the contract got signed. Tigers are still struggling to find games right now.

Miami was more of a matter of not having the cash needed to pay what we wanted in a guarantee. Their own AD admitted that when the deal was signed. They couldn't afford our price rate.

All I know is that Notre Dame and Penn St need to throw us a bone for letting them hold camp with us. The Irish opening the new Ted would be pretty nice...

How does that work? 03-wink

That would be a coup d'etat.

How do other Sun Belt teams get quality non-conference games at home?

Don't know after next year but I know next year we are playing 2 money games vs. West Virginia and Georgia.

I think our schedule has been pretty good this year with all things considered. At a minimum I would like to see seasons with only 5 home games fall on years when we are playing Ga State in Atl...even though I think 6 home games on any year would be the ideal. Even though I love the exposure we should get with the two Thursday night games this year, I can also see how those that give a lot more than I do may not be as pleased about even fewer Saturday home games.

More than anything, and this is what I like about the schedule this year, is that I don't see why our "money" games have to be exclusively a "top 10" type of program the way it was while we were FCS, at least not more than one of them anyway.

If Navy was worked in to a 2-1 deal or something, for example, then 2 reasonable money games, an FCS, and a 2-1 would be almost ideal, IMO.

Replace Jacksonville in 2016 and we are looking at Ole Miss, Sav State, Western Michigan...and a blank spot. Would be a perfect set up for Navy (or any service academy really etc) to return the trip on the hypothetical 2-1 scenario I mentioned. Anyway, we'll see how it falls. Ga Tech again would also be a great get. Getting to play teams OOC regularly that we haven't seen in the past is new and exciting. Ga Tech, Nc State, West Virginia next year, Ole Miss etc. Should be fun times or us fans.

Wyoming, Southern Miss, and Akron in addition to ODU. There are rumors about an ACC school though no one can confirm that. I would guess it would likely be Wake Forest. So, at this point, no big name schools or BCS schools. Not sure we are that far ahead of you guys.

I know they are easy to forget, but we have a home & home with Charlotte too.

RE: How do other Sun Belt teams get quality non-conference games at home?
I don't know if it will be realistic until we have another seating expansion. I read on our board someone say that we clear $250k when we have a home game. If we sell out because we have a home game with a big-name opponent, I don't see how we realistically clear much more than that unless the fans of that team buy up a bunch of season tix just so they can come to that game. Problem with that is, the bigger conference teams who might possibly come to Statesboro (UK, Vandy, UNC, Miss St, etc.) probably don't have a big enough fan footprint in our area that they would buy up a bunch of those tix. So then the situation is you're trading a $1 million dollar payout to go play an away game at a P-5 school, for maybe a $50-100k bump in what your normal home game would net you in the name of prestige...I don't know if we are in the financial situation to take that tradeoff currently. That is my thoughts on it at present.

You guys are focusing on the game, not the number of fans GS brought.

Why do you think schools like VT continue to schedule ECU? Butts in the seats.

GT is having attendance issues. GS brought a good crowd. Shouldn't be that surprising.

We also have UNCC and UAB with home and homes. It is a little tougher with us I guess for SEC and ACC teams due to the fact that at least every other year 1/2 of them are coming to Atlanta or Athens and don't have to pay.

There is more to consider than just a single game revenue. 1st is season tickets. Having a P5 (even a lower tier one) would increase sells and get more donations. You might not make the money back on a single game, but over the course of the year and beyond you will get that $1M plus some. Also, having larger names at your home would increase the chances of being on TV (at least regionally) which would help bring in more sponsors.

I guess so. It's also struck me that maybe they like the idea of starting an in-state rivalry that will be more competitive for them.

(Side note: I don't know if this one has come up in previous discussions of possibilities, but I think the State/Southern rivalry should be called Dirty Dirty Hate. Contrasts it with Clean Old-Fashioned Hate and gives the idea of a southern rivalry for a new generation.)

Would you actually donate, buy tickets and attend games if we scheduled that way or would you just start threads on message boards about a team you support only in cyberspace?

Don't know if anyone knows for sure.

There were some good comments in this thread, though.

That and and running a unique offense, beating FL and almost beating 2 ACC teams would make it a little harder to schedule.
