Also showed W&M with 31 points. And the clock's been off a bunch.

This officiating crew is either poor or rusty - taking way too long to figure out this penalty

Norfolk State Game
Judging by the number of students walking around sorority court with nice dresses and Greek pins on I think tonight was a rush night and very few (if any) sororities or rushers were in attendance. Hopefully a big crowd (and better weather) for next week.

+1. Bend-don't-break defense was in full effect tonight, and the offense looked out of sync. The O-line didn't have a great night. Cluley threw some nice balls, but also had some mixups with the wideouts on what route was being run.

Yeah, they're wrapping up with sorority recruitment. God that process is such a shitshow, the fraternities do it much better.

I was at the game and the attendance wasn't bad actually, especially considering the rain/rush stuff. Student section was pretty full, though dropped after half time, but the other bleachers were a lot more spotty

Coach didn't sound pleased with the QB and OL play last night.

RE: Norfolk State Game
Some observations:

*Defense gave up lots of yards again (see last week at Hampton), but held firm in touch although should have stopped Norfolk TD when we had their back for a 10-yard loss near our goal line and somehow let him score.

*Big plays by defense (pick six and another Interception and alert fumble recovery. Also four sacks when they counted. However, still some softness in defensive backfield and, again, some poor tackling when plays should have been ended.

*Offense overall was very poor. Halfway decent for 50% of first half and a perfect 55-yard TD bomb from Cluley to McBride (nice to see McBride back and at full speed). Running game and passing game deteriorated as game progressed. Cluley way off target many passes, offensive line again allowed NState to put lots of pressure on Cluley and sack him three times. No running game at all...inconsistent and too much NState penetration.

*Very, very conservative game plan....no reverses, no passes over the middle, no slant passes, no end runs, no "wildcat"offense. Weather had something, perhaps, to do with it,
but overall offense lackluster and a worrying feeling about Cluley this game for first time.
We had a hard time getting any offensive line "push" against NState defense.

*Crowd of 8200 very good considering poor weather...the way crowd ticket sales were spread out over all sections indicates we would have been well over 10,000 on decent night. And I thought student attendance was ok on a rainy, miserable evening.

*Team is now 2-1 but, frankly, has not put it together in any game. Lafayette is decent
(won 50-3 last night) and we'll have to be ready for the game or perhaps suffer the ignominity
of losing to them again (remember a couple of years ago?). We need to see more consistent
offensive line play--both blocking for runners and stopping pass rush--and Cluley show some
consistency throwing the ball. Defense needs to sharpen tackling and stop giving up soft yardage. And hit harder...we're not hitting like last season yet.

Nice to be 2-1. Concerned about the defense. Not as physical as last year, and the swagger is not there? A few new players, and of late some guys playing in different positions. Airek Green has been a force so far, am hoping that some other guys that may have been dinged up can get healthy.

Based on what I saw last night, Tre McBride is running well, but is not back to full speed. I hope he gets all the way back this season.

RE: Norfolk State Game
Cluely shows promise, but definitely needs to work on his touch (which should come with game reps). He consistently overthrew on deep balls (some, but not all) can be attributed to the wind, and threw much too hard and too low on the short release routes. He had his young tight end open several times, but you cannot expect a tight end (generally) to be able to snare hard low throws.

The right side of the O line continues to have a few problems. Hopefully, repetition will help here as well.
Too many missed tackles on D.

We showed some holes last night that, hopefully, were weather induced. Let's see what happens next weekend.

This week, just like last, I think we were really complacent in the second half. Need to snap out of that bad habit.

+5

No doubt concern for injury, but unless the o-line starts slowing down the penetration, they better let Cluley loose with his legs to add the additional dimension...
Except for the one blocked punt, the kicking game is outstanding.

Team has a long way to go to compete for a CAA title.

RE: Norfolk State Game
I generally try to be positive only on here - but I have to echo the concerns of others that we have a lot of improvement to do if we want to compete for a CAA title, let alone a National Title.

The good thing is the league seems down in a lot of ways this year, so the window is open. We just need to clean things up to step through it.

RE: Norfolk State Game
Isaiah Stephens (#73), a true freshman, is starting at defensive tackle for the Tribe. He played very effectively Saturday night...had four tackles (one clean, three assisted) and generally was a big factor in clogging up the center of the line.

This young man is huge...6-2, 324 pounds, one of the largest defensive linemen we've had in some time, and has very good lateral movement and push.

When was the last time a true freshman started at defensive tackle for Jimmye?

While Isaiah is starting, and playing well, he's a starter because of injuries. Tyler Claytor returned to action against Norfolk State, and will likely return to the starting lineup. Claytor and Jasper Coleman both played as true freshmen.

After watching the game recap I noticed Cluley had a defender in his face on the bomb to Tre. It looks like he took a hit but still delivered a great throw. I was also reminded how frustrating the Spartan's second touchdown was...
