June Jones resigns at SMU. I can only guess there is a health issue going on, otherwise why would you leave your team after week 2???

he turned them around from not being very good to being terrible. the deep pockets backers were probably revolted by the fact that untexas thumped them. that sort of thing is not allowed..

Says he just signed a three year extension this past off season.

He tried to bail before, to Arizona State I think, but had to turn around and go back to SMU. Never a good thing to communicate to your players.

Wonder where he will turn up next?

in all fairness, he did have a somewhat turn around with SMU. Prior to his arrival in 2008, the Mustangs hadn't been to a bowl game in over twenty years and had been through five head coaches with absolutely abysmal records.

Under Jones:
-Ponies went to four consecutive bowl games (3-1 in those games)
-led them to the 2010 CUSA championship game
-guided them from CUSA to the AAC

Before Jones arrived they had one winning season in 20 years. In his 6 years there he has had 4 winning seasons. Now it may be time for him to move on, I think he did a tremendous job.

The reason SMU was horrible for 20 years was for a little run in they had with the NCAA. That death penalty will do a number on your football program.

Butch Davis
Phillip Montgomery
Mark Hudspeth
Chad Morris
Mike Norvell.

Unless Hudspeth has tired of ULL, I don't see him leaving for SMU.

Lately, a lot of the "mid-majors" have hired some big names that didn't work out at their last jobs, so Butch Davis could get some noise, and SMU can pay him if he wants it. And they aren't afraid of the NCAA so them and Butch would be great together.

I actually feel bad for SMU, because the death penalty was REALLY a death penalty. I don't think they'll ever get near the level they were before, if for no other reason than the big 2 won't allow them to do it.

I don't understand how the death penalty all those years ago could affect them for that long. Shoot, Marshall lost there whole team in 1970 but they were fairly decent by the 80's.

the death penalty was not the problem. how the university reacted to it was. to say the recruiting restrictions imposed on the football program were draconian would be an understatement. the football program humiliated the university and the reaction to that humiliation was enthusiastic. that's what let to the twenty years of suck. when they hired jones part of the agreement was that the university would relax their recruiting restrictions. that more that jones has allowed some return to respectable play.

The thing that fueled it was the SWC. That competitive environment in Texas college football got wrung out of Dallas. Dallas almost has this "We lost that battle, we got burned, on to the next thing."

SMU is at ground zero of recruiting and an area that is overflowing with money. It would take Dallas wanting to get back into that game, and SMU being willing to go full bore again. I don't think the Big 2 would be able to stop them if that combo was actually ready and willing.
