RE: Silly season is starting early this year(June Jones resigns)
SMU lost the 87 season and were only allowed a half schedule in 88, which they didn't play. So they had to completely build a program from the ground up after 1988. And they had to do that with their hands tied behind their backs. And this is a totally different situation then the Marshall incident. SMU wasn't allowed to recruit, was on probation until 1990 and had 55 scholarships removed for 4 years. Also, they only had 6 coaches after that. Nine of their boosters were banned from the program, and lets face it, the reason they were good when they were is because those guys were allowed to pay those players. That program was dismantled in 1988, it took 20 years for it to return to mid-major success.

Is it possible that depending on how our season goes that they might want Willie Fritz? Fritz has coached in Texas for a while.

the death penalty was not the problem. how the university reacted to it was. to say the recruiting restrictions imposed on the football program were draconian would be an understatement. the football program humiliated the university and the reaction to that humiliation was enthusiastic. that's what let to the twenty years of suck. when they hired jones part of the agreement was that the university would relax their recruiting restrictions. that more that jones has allowed some return to respectable play.

I lived there during all that. There were a lot of people who wanted it killed, the corpse burned, and the memory of the ashes erased. A lot of students, academics, and (non-sports fanatic) alumni were humiliated and incensed. I think some of them only agreed to keep the program so they could continue to see it whipped.

The thing is the whole SWC was doing it minus Rice. Every last one of them should have received the Death Penalty again except for Rice and not just SMU.

SMU paid for the sins of almost a whole conference.

It definitely hurt them for years because of the high academic standards imposed on the athletic department by the administration. I remember the pres. saying they wanted to emulate duke. part of jones's deal was that those would be relaxed a little. their program was already losing fans and support. the student body had a large percentage of nonsports types and the old class of rich blue-hairs was dying out. I remember them giving away thousands of tickets at 7-11's on game day and still only having crowds in the 30k range. uta played them a cpl. times back then at texas stadium.

I think it was once mentioned in the ESPN special on the SMU Case, that SMU cheated because Texas Cheated, which caused Arkansas to cheat, and Baylor to start doing the same.

None of those programs would ever admit they cheated now though.

It has been replaced by the SEC.

Whenever you are a coach known for a prolific offense and you get shut out by Baylor and are held scoreless for the first 59:50 of the UNT game you're gonna be in hit water.

Mike Leach is struggling at WSU, has the run and shoot type offenses been cracked?[/align]

Is the movie "Necessary Roughness" loosely based on SMU and it's death penalty?

They'd better be glad Charles Barkley never played for any of them....

Every CFB fan should watch Pony Excess.

I've seen that Jones had moved into a hotel before the season started. That's never good and obviously translated to the team.

He'll pop up somewhere in a year or two after time heals the wounds.

Yeah but they used Texas State and filmed it at UNT.

Seems TXST coaches might be putting out feelers for current players and commits. Evaluations first.

Anyone else got any "word' on your staff maybe doing the same thing?

A lot of Trans Ams and cold hard cash. I read an article once that Eric Dickerson, Craig James and the QB at the time was bringing in 25K a semester. In the late 70s early 80s 25K was a ton of money.

To this day Dickerson won't answer questions about his time at SMU. His standard answer is "That was the past and that's where it will stay".
