SMU paid for the sins of almost a whole conference.

Never knew that, but it makes sense.
SWC was something else. Wish it never went away, some great
coaches and players, and even had "pizazz"!

I think it was once mentioned in the ESPN special on the SMU Case, that SMU cheated because Texas Cheated, which caused Arkansas to cheat, and Baylor to start doing the same.

None of those programs would ever admit they cheated now though.

You mean Oklahoma did not have a reason to cheat? 05-stirthepot

At one point in the SWC, Arkansas and Rice were the only teams in the league that weren't either on probation or just off probation. (Hogs got the 88 and 89 SWC titles)

As the 30 for 30 special points out, SMU was a special case. Everyone else when they got busted put their heads down and acted contrite and didn't do anything that would catch much notice.

SMU in contrast actually upped the ante and got bolder. I guess they figured if they were on probation then they needed to do more to lessen the impact and if they were already in jail what more could the NCAA do to them.

Bad choice.

SMU could have recovered sooner but SMU had been shamed among their academic peers and shamed among their rank and file donors. Yeah there were boosters who were crazy about football but the people who left SMU to take normal middle class jobs who were offended that the school let football get that out of control.

Remember also SMU is still a religious institution and is turning out pastors. Their post-graduate theology programs are well regarded and it is not uncommon for people in other denominations to go to SMU for post-graduate work. Tainting that degree with school being noted for deceit and cheating isn't good for a theology school.

So SMU has kept a throttle on athletics, especially football since that time.

Finally as to the idea that SMU could be a beast in Dallas, I don't see it. They could garner much more support than they do now but those of you old enough to remember the Pony Express likely also remember watching SMU on TV rated in the top 5 and Texas Stadium being maybe half full unless they were playing Texas or TAMU.

This is true. In the SWC there was 3 step children basically. Rice, TCU and SMU. If they weren't playing Texas or Texas AM their stadiums were 1/4 to 1/2 full.

The Pony Express (Dickerson and James) gave SMU notoriety just like Phi Slamma Jamma did to Houston. But just as Phi Slamma Jamma faded off into the sunset and Houston basketball fell off afterwards so did SMU after the Pony Express went to the NFL and USFL. By 1985 when the NCAA started their probing into the SWC. SMU was back down to 6-5.

In the mid-80's Rice wasn't even drawing enough to meet I-A standards but there was a conference exemption then and they were getting some great crowds for Texas, TAMU and Houston, and really even Arkansas.

Was quite a line for them to say the players lost money per year by going to the NFL.

It takes a sports minded administration..baylor and tcu and byu are all doing well in sports. they just dont seem to have a strong pro sports vibe over at smu. they will have good basketball and the yuppie sports like soccer and golf..but right now they are not football oriented. they have unlimited funds so that could quickly change with the right folks in charge.
